Description

During my last hike before the quarantine, at the end of February, my friend and I came across a field of spring snowflakes in the middle of the forest. These delicate flowers mark the end of winter, by evoking the return of life in all its beauty and fragility after the dark season. As the snow melts, some forgotten things may also be revealed...

The cycle of the seasons (and thus, the cycle of life) is always very inspiring for me; I guess more and more of my drawings are about time passing by and the ephemerality of things.

The dead knight is rather androgynous to leave you free to imagine the story of your choice, but for me, it is definitely a woman. I love the theme of armored/knight women, I feel connected to it, because it symbolizes (in my opinion) the women refusing their traditional roles (stereotyped feminity, maternity, being married...).

In the background, the fortification and towers were inspired by Gwrych Castle in Northern Wales. I like to include old stones in my drawings, as well as the moon; they represent the silent and eternal witnesses of the passage of time.

I know. These things may be complex, but it's really relaxing. But the satisfaction at the end (especially if it turns out well, like in this case) is really worth it.

This is very good. I too find the idea of fallen knight fascinating.

Beautiful work, I love the sense of time and seasons passing.. even the age of chivalry and castles must come to an end.. and ivy swallows up everything in time.. nice music too Also I like your medieval aesthetic that would not be out of place in a book-of-hours, or on a tapestry

Personally I’m glad you didn’t.. it’s introducing a colour into an otherwise B+W scene.. and that activates different cells in the retina (I think..I’m not an expert).. and then suddenly the brain starts reading all the black as really black (not a stand-in for another colour) and the same with white, and grey. Β Just my pet theory of course, but I think introducing one colour into an otherwise B+W scene hurts it that way, it makes the black and white into real colours rather than signifiers for other colours. Β However, it usually works out quite well in your case..so I don’t know why I even mention it. Β
