Personality:
+ Intelligent || Chance is a pretty bright pup; he’s aware of boundaries and makes sure he doesn’t cross them. Of course, no one’s perfect and he has his slip-ups, but for the most part, he tries his best to be street-wise and know and understand the pecking order.
+ Caring || Although he’s been through a lot, Chance still has a heart. No matter how mean or nasty he gets, when he sees other pups who have been abandoned or hurt like he was, he takes on a big brother persona and will attempt to comfort them in his own odd ways. He’s not so kind when the dog’s a little too old to be sniveling and showing that kind of weakness, though.
= Productive || Chance might not be a pup anymore, but he certainly has the energy of one. Even though he’s pretty mopey most of the time, he does like to cause a little bit of chaos for fun. It’s the easiest way for him to get out his anger and frustration without causing any serious harm, even if it does end up with him getting punished.
= Mature || Anyone would need to grow up in order to survive such harsh conditions, so that’s exactly what Chance did. Despite being young, he’s got quite the mouth on him and isn’t shy about adult topics. He picked up a lot of things in that place, and he secretly loves seeing the shocked faces adults wear when he speaks up and shows off just how mature he is.
- Pessimistic || It’s unsurprising Chance’s outlook on life is rather bleak. It’s practically all he’s ever known, so if anyone seems to be plucky or upbeat, he automatically thinks they’re idiots and will do everything within his power to drag them back to reality.
- Cynical || Chance’s start in life wasn’t exactly under the best conditions. Even though he’s still very young, he’s jaded and seems disinterested in everything--very unlike his curious(ly-dimwitted) puppy peers. He’s not afraid to make snide comments or smart-mouth adults, even if that does end up with him getting punished for it. He’s smart enough to know when not to push things too far.
Pre-Group History:
It’s unsurprising that Chance’s birth wasn’t anything to be celebrated. The humans who housed his parents had stolen his mother, a blue-nosed pit bull, right out of her human’s yard, then used her to make fighters for their illegal dog-fighting ring. And being the runt of the litter, his destiny was to be a bait dog as soon as he was old enough to put up a fight. The constant fear he felt as a pup pushed him to become mature by making him desensitized to the violence he was exposed to. He seemed to be the first to recognize the stakes in his situation, so he was considered the leader out of his siblings, and even other pups who gravitated to him for security when others couldn't offer it. And while his mother tried her best to comfort her pups, she was dealing with her own trauma, often making her unavailable as she dissociated to cope. This left him feeling jaded and angry towards her, but also to other adults since no one ever stepped in to help. He had to do everything on his own, and while that just seemed to be his job, he felt frustrated that he didn't know what he was doing but everyone expected him to be responsible for them. Heck, he didn't even have a given name since no one even bothered with it; they were just whelps until they proved themselves to be worthy of being named.
Thankfully, before he could be offered up as a sacrifice to the stronger dogs, the police got involved and the ringleaders were quick to destroy evidence. Some dogs were killed, others were set loose, and the pups were either left for dead or thrown out. Chance just so happened to be the latter. Stuffed in a bag and tossed in the trash, the young dog found himself on a boat to a garbage island by himself. For the first time in his life, he seemed to have a stroke of luck, as the junkyard dogs were desperate for members. This would probably be the only chance he’d ever get to prove himself worthy of living, which is why he decided to call himself Chance.
He moved up through the ranks rather quickly, being the perfect footsoldier, and grew close to the royals. A little too close. He developed feelings for one of the princes, but kept that to himself. It wasn't his place to believe he was worthy of an alpha-like dog's time or attention. Still, he enjoyed spending time with him and found himself acting more and more pup-like when he was around his growing circle of friends. But then a decree was made by the new crown prince that tore the faction apart. Dogs were fighting dogs and Chance held fast to his position as royal guard. He was at a loss when the crown prince was challenged by his younger brother, the dog Chance had grown closest to. He watched with pain in his eyes as the younger was bested and banished.
Life carried on quietly from there on out--things were as chaotic as ever, but Chance felt his ability to trust was broken and his moral compass askew. It wasn't until weeks later that he finally said what was on his mind. He was punished, of course, leading to the new scars on his body. After that, he slipped away to find a new home since he was no longer able to go on living under those conditions. In his time alone, he thought of all the violence he had experienced in his life and had come to the decision that he would never use violence against someone unless it was in self-defense. He would rather put his strength towards protecting pups who needed someone to look after them. That is if he could find any he could help. He longed for the safety of a pack, like the one he once belonged to, and, eventually, he found it again with the Pariah. He met an odd, very motherly-like female who saw his sorry state and invited him in. Unbeknownst to him, she was using him as some sort of pawn; she thought what many others might think about pitbulls and made a decision that the Pariah would benefit from having more muscle around. However, as soon as Prim introduced Chance to the leader, he found himself plunged back into the past.
