Description In a world where cities and towns are surrounded by immense walls, and where the wilderness is filled with lethal mechanical birds, lives are on the line constantly. Sentries who patrol the wall will be the first to feel the blades of an attack. Those who fix and upgrade the great defense are a few mistakes away from the claws and drills below. Turret gunners that take down fliers become top targets during assaults. And citizens themselves are aware that they lives may be ended in seconds if an assault succeeds. One of the most risky jobs, though, is that of runners. The isolated populations are efficiently self-sustaining, not needing much from the harsh wilderness. But trade and the desire for goods is still high, especially amongst cities that can create valuable goods that the others do not have, yet crave. And in times of crisis, one population may need aid and resources from another, posing the threat of travel. That is why runners exist. Runners are people who travel from city to city, transporting goods and people through the lethal wilderness. What they carry depends on the demand, be it technology, travelers, food or even drugs. Their services are very expensive, which makes sense for people who risk their lives constantly. But they know the markets and know where to make a profit. Whatever is "in" or is needed is an interest to them, especially when people will pay top dollar. To do this, they travel in fast, armored vehicles, always in a convoy. The bare minimum they travel with is three vehicles, with the front and back being mainly muscle and the middle carrying the most goods. All vehicles carry the goods they have smuggled, so that not all is lost when the middle is destroyed, but the middle one carries the most. All vehicles have turrets and cannons on them, used to fend off the Aviaton horder. Once runners leave the gates of one city, they are on their own until they reach the next. So they must outpace, outthink and outmaneuver whatever comes their way. Gunners take down Bladebacks and Shrieks, while the drivers are responsible for dodging attacks and staying on course. All vehicles look out for one another, but once one is disabled and brought down, the runners will leave them with little sympathy. Once you stop, your dead. If the convoy makes it back alive, they will celebrate and blow their money on desires and wants. After all the joy and fun has been had, they are back on running. If you are likely to die tomorrow, there is no point investing in the future. Runners are obvious to pick out in a crowd, as they are the ones who live like they are dying. But with all the threats they face when they are running goods, most of them pale to one certain Aviaton. It has different names, like Doomorn or Cassowrath, but most know them as Terror Birds.

Terror Birds are large and bulky, powerful machines that could outmuscle and outweigh a simple Bladeback. Covered in blades and saws, they seem to be the tanks of the Aviaton army. But one would be foolish to assume the large robot is helpless when put up against a quick opponent. In truth, they are one of the fastest of the Aviatons once they gain momentum. When starting from a standing pose, a Terror Bird seems like it could only trot. But as it gets going, it begins to pick up speed rapidly. After a bit, a Terror Bird will achieve speeds that allow it to keep pace with runner vehicles. And that is exactly what they do. Though not as common as Shrieks or Bladebacks, Terror Birds move around the wilderness, waiting for the signs of runners. When the vehicles are spotted, or the sound of a Stolas alerts them, they give chase. Their quick speeds allow them to keep up with the vehicles, but it is cunning and hunting skill that takes them down. Terror Birds will work with Bladebacks and other pursuers to trick vehicles into fatal mistakes. Forcing them to swerve, or break formation, or even run them into other obstacles. Their tactics vary depending on position. If they are behind the vehicles when the chase starts, then they will use other Aviatons to try and slow the vheciles into cutting range. If they can get beside the vehicles, they will ram them or try to cut their way in. Their major threat is when a Terror Bird spots a convey when the vehicles are heading toward, or past its position. At this position, the Terror Bird will run to meet the convoy head on, or try to T-bone them as they pass. When this happens, the Terror Bird unleashes its most powerful attack: The Kick. With an immense weight, crazy momentum and bladed body, the Terror Bird will charge in, leap and kick the vehicle with its legs, striking it like a cannonball. Vehicles hit by The Kick are instantly destroyed, along with its occupants. The sheer force sends any vehicle tumbling, which is death to all inside. If the kick is unleashed head on, and the vehicle fails to doge, then the whole convoy may be destroyed as the Terror Bird rips through them in a line. Though they are big targets, Terror Birds can take a lot of punishment, and will keep chase even when being gunned down by a turret.

Terror Birds actually have four eyes on each side of the head. This is to give a good range of sight for depth and peripheral.

Terror Birds will join in on city assaults and will throw their blades and bulk at the walls. They often charge and kick the walls and gates, searching for weak spots. Terror Birds alone caused the reinforcement and upgrading of gates when a kick blew a door open and allowed the ground troops to surge in. The city was nearly lost, but they were able to seal out the Aviatons and destroy those inside. Casualties were extremely high during that assault.

You could make a movie out of this stuff!

I could totally see it. I am surprised it has gotten to that level. I had no intentions of letting this thing go so far, but once again my mind demands that everything has some story or place. Along with all the different birds that can be turned into bladed monstrosities.

The movie could be about a very successful supply runner, and all the challenges that come with the job. I kind of noticed that, whenever you do something, it's almost never just one thing, you add all this extra stuff, which isn't a bad thing. I sometimes do that as well.

Yeah, a runner would be the best focus. Working at a job where you have a good chance not making back alive (With little to no recognition if you do die), where you are forced to abandon your coworkers and friends if their vehicle is disabled. A lifestyle where you live in the now, with little hope for the future. Where most runners blow their money all at once, before heading out on the next suicidal mission. And even the decision of what goods and supplies you will risk your life for. Drugs for high-paying addicts and rich folk? Resources for defense? Food for a starving colony?

And there could be a whole thing on how runners have to learn about their enemy. Find a way to get inside the mind of the Aviatons and know how to react. Looking for tells, learning from past attacks and strategies.

I would pay good money to see a movie like that (It would be the most original movie hollwood has ever made in a long time). And if it dosn't become a movie, you should at least write a book. Have you ever considered being a writer? I think, well at least in my opinion, that you would make a good writer.

It would be a cool world to see on the big screen, but I am pretty sure I don't have the connections for that. For writing, I never considered such a thing in the past. I never took any real writing courses, especially as a Fisheries and Wildlife major, and I never had a knack for it when I was young. But recently, my interests in it have been growing. It started with a few creepypastas for Bogleech's contest, and since, I have been dabbling in short stories. Writing a book would be a huge step for me, and one that I think I would need some more practice with. Right now, I am working on two short stories (I swear I am going to finish these!), with one getting close to completion. After those two are done (because, seriously, I need to finish these things every once in a while), I have plans on writing my first story with the Knights of the Wrong Table. With the other two done, I can put all focus into doing that story and then seeing how it turns out. From all the feedback I have been getting on the Aviatons, I am up for trying a story with them too, but not novel length. Once I get a couple of these longer, short stories (Is that a thing?) under my belt, I think I will give the book idea a shot.

And thank you! I glad that my works and worlds are interesting enough for people to want full stories on! I hope I can deliver!

If you do start to write full length stories, I would love to read them!  I personally have always wanted to write stories myself, but i'm a little lazy, and a bit of a procrastinator. Though I do have some rather unique story ideas myself. And you are welcome sir!

I will definitely post the stories, especially since it was you guys who have motivated me to develop these worlds. I am thinking on posting some of my older stories after I give them a quick edit. Don't know when I will get to that, but I want to.

As for writing, I feel you on that. That is why my stories take so freaking long to write, I just get distracted too easily. But I am starting to get more into the idea of writing, especially after all this world building. I hope it works out!
