It looks like a Cherry... which quickly causes my sleep deprived brain to think this: The poor girl is a street urchin, probably newly made having lost her family and home to whatever reason, and she was hungry, being near a market place she sees others steal food, but tries to keep true to her parents teachings and she sees a small cherry, thinking the fruit vendor wouldn't notice one small cherry missing, she takes it, but the vendor already wary of the street urchin thieves, snatches her hand and basically cuts one off her fingers not only to make her remember never to steal from them again or in general, but to also make an example out of her to other urchins. Somehow managing to escape, or being let go, the poor girl is curled up in one of the seemingly empty alley ways when a stranger ,whom had been watching this entire time though the intent unclear, approaches the child with a cherry in hand. Possibly to either entice the starving child to come with them, or which ever....
