Description This is my first try with sumi-e ink painting. I've always loved the aesthetic and its a very poetic genre. This is supposed to be a chrysanthemum, one of the four gentleman. I don't know how accurate it is, it's from memory.

This is a very fall-ish peice because summer is getting too hot
The "seal" is my fingerprint outlined in red, and has the character for sun in there.

I have a lot to learn so any tips and critiques are appreciated!

Wow, beautiful and simple.
I like your seal! It's really unique, and pretty cool.
Are you going to make any more paintings like these? I think they'd look great.

Nice try!
It looks really beautiful.

Can you tell me more about this.. sumi-e ink painting? Never heard of it,
but I really like how it looks on the paper.

Well, the definition is different for many people. But in a very broad definition: Sumi-e is painting with ink. Sumi in Japanese means ink, and the E indicates a painting or drawing. Usually sumi-e painting is about expression of the thing you are painting (usually nature, people are rarely in sumi-e paintings).

People will make bamboo look graceful and strong using different brushstrokes. Or paint an orchid and make it look delicate and feminine. A very good sumi-e artist can express an exact emotion, feeling, or atmosphere with just a few brush strokes. If you want to know more, I suggest checking out a book from the library

Why the character for sun by the way? I like the idea of using ones fingerprint for the chop, if a little messy.

Yes, the fingerprint was messier than I had planned, I think I'll make a stamp out of clay that has my fingerprint but refine it a little; make it neater, more square, and more clear details.
Or maybe a stone instead of clay, I have no idea what type would be soft enough to carve.

I put that character in b/c the orange color was suppossed to represent the sunset. And all I know in Chinese is the character for sun haha

Thanks for the good comment

You could use wood instead of stone for the chop. Jade and soap stone are suppose to be soft... I think.

Yes, wood might be a good idea, I'll try it
