Description
In this alternate Marvel Universe James Buchanan Barnes aka “Bucky” comes from a long line of proud military servicemen in this alternate Marvel Universe and has been groomed from an early age for a life in military service, training to becoming physically athletic and conditioned as well as proficient the use of various combat weapons and hand to hand combat. Barnes, like Steve Rogers was very patriotic and eager to serve his country and wanted to combat the evil of the Axis forces and was able to join the military as soon as he legally became of age to join. His high level of weapons skills brought him to the attention of US military intelligence officers who recruited him to be a member of an elite Allied combat unit that operated in the European combat zone known as the Howling Commandos.

Barnes was the youngest member of this combat team and a big fan of the stateside exploits of Captain America against various Axis saboteurs & spies discovered to be in operation there. When Steve Rogers was eventually assigned to be a part of their special division when he was sent to Europe, Barnes befriended him and their similar attitudes towards freedom & justice leads to Rogers choosing him to operate as his partner.

Barnes is outfitted with his own colorful uniform and takes the fitting descriptive name of Kid Commando. As Kid Commando, Barnes undertook various missions alongside Captain America, his fellow squad members in the Howling Commandos and as part of the Allied superteam called the Invaders. Barnes’ heroic career came to an end during the last days of World War II when he along with Captain America and the Howling Commandos raided the secret base of infamous Nazi scientist and inventor Baron Heinrich Zemo who had developed a powerful prototype atomic style missile and was preparing to launch it in order to destroy Washington D.C. and sacrificed himself by causing the missile to detonate before it could reach its target when it was launched by Zemo.

Or at least that is what was widely assumed. The ravaged and barely alive body of Bucky Barnes was however recovered by an experimental Nazi submersible fleeing from Germany carrying a handful of scientists who had served under Zemo and had developed various early breakthroughs in the field of cybernetic research on behalf of Hitler's Third Reich.

These scientists were able to develop a process to keep Barnes' brain effectively alive and conducted various cybernetic related experiments on his severely damaged physical form after they went into hiding at the end of the war. The scientists' supposed clandestine activities eventually came to the attention of the Red Skull and Baron Strucker, who brought them into the folds of their neophyte HYDRA organization where the various cybernetic research and experimentation that were continually performed on Barnes lead to the development and creation of HYDRA's Dreadnaught combat automaton units.

Barnes himself would finally be made a fully operative cyborg after decades of being experimented upon when the Red Skull aware of who he once was decided to use him as a weapon against his former partner Captain America in the Skull's renewed war against the resurrected hero.

Dubbed Deathlok, his memories of who he truly was were altered and his combat & tactical skills were enhanced by way of his cybernetic and cerebral computer augmentations. Programed with a drive to destroy Captain America as being the major factor for the incident responsible for his current cybernetic existence, he is one of the Red Skull & HYDRA's most effective operatives against both Captain America & S.H.I.E.L.D. Captain America & his allies are currently unaware of who Deathlok truly is.
