-PRIVATE COLLECTION-

The portrait of a very important person in my life.
I really struggled on this one for over three days, to give her beauty some justice and do all the lights on the face (expecially the ones on the nose) in the more "delicate" way.

The inscription is from a John Keats sonnet (the one entitled "As from the darkening gloom a silver dove").

Hello and I am from and I am here to provide you with the critique you requested. Thank you for waiting patiently and I will be honest and respectful and I hope in the end that my suggestions will help for the future.  For this critique all I ask in return is that you keep in mind that all critiques are subjective.

To begin, I would like to say that I think you did a great job drawing her face. I really like the accurate naturalistic anatomy of her face structure. I really love the personality that you added to this piece. I like how the emotion is indicated with her eyes and lips and how she has this pondering look written all over it. Very well draw and she looks really beautiful.
The focal point to me is her eyes. I love how you strengthened it by using values instead of color which I think makes the piece more harmonious. Their is a short range in value with this piece and normally I prefer to see more, but I think it works well here because it adds to the softness feel that the overall compositions seems to have. I like the contrast of colors. The color contrast between the dark hair and the light skin and shirt work very well. I think the darker colors highlight important areas like the eyes and mouth but like the hair, it frames and leads the eyes to the emphasis point of the piece.
Me personally I am weak with faces but to see they way you did this piece is very inspiring for me to keep studying I love the contrast between colors, the soft values and also the overall composition is put together very very well. And the words add a interesting dynamic to the piece which makes it more unique, I like that very much.

I have 2 suggestions that are very small. My 1st suggestions is I think it would not hurt to add a few more texture to the hair: like strains. I can see a few but I think it will add a little bit more dynamic to the hair if a little texture was applied to places like the pony tail on her shoulder and where the hair parts on the right side by her scalp. And for the future my second suggestion is to mess around more with diverse colors in the skin. I think this piece looks fine as is and I can see a hint of other colors, but if you wish to pump up the colors or make them more dynamic try adding varieties. I advice draw some sketches and color in some areas and see what you can get for skin, I have seen pinks and blues work as skin tones on some piece so it maybe something you can try to see if you like it for yourself.

You have beautiful signature pallets feel free to add to them mix them up whatever I think you have so much skill that there is endless possibilities that you can create. I really love this piece, the subject is beautiful and overall composition is beautifully done .

Thank you for your time and I hope this help

First of all, let me thank you for your words, your advices, and for including this piece in your "Beautiful Traditional" collection!
I'm really glad you liked it, and your critic is very poignant.

About your suggestions, well, I agree to the overall sense expecially about the hair; in fact, in all the further pieces I've made (this one dates back to the last year) I adopted a different way of texturing the light and shades of the hair.
The "skin tone issue" is a bit more complicated, since I don't like most of the "modern" ways of picturing a skin (which is, I suppose, what you're talking about); beacuse of this, I am really drawn to artists like Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Fernand Khnopff and their way of doing REALLY pale skins with just a couple of colours.

Anyway, thank you again for taking time to have wonderfully reviewed my work once again.

Your welcome I try to do my best to offer artist hopefully some type of helpful advice

This is why it is so diffcult to critique art especially of a skilled artist such as yourself  because I just am not sure if it is style or done because the artist doesn't realize it ( so I try to mention everything just in case). But the skin thing deffinately seems like a style thing so just disregard it then because it does explain why everytime I see your art it reminds me of classic art piece from the past and I love that, especially in mordern day that is hard to find. Now that you mention it I think you have succeed in drawing like Rossetti because you both use minimal colors and yet your skin renders are so naturalistic ( I guess which dispels the modern theory that skin needs at least 6 different colors God! ). I think it is a modern thing to use so much colors since they are out there but I personally just like colors because my admiration of William Adolphe Bouguereau, though I admit I am weak at colors

Oh, yes, Bouguereau was such a GREAT colorist!
His skin tones are absolutely amazing... he just kept glazing and glazing for months...

Anyway, thank you for what you said, now and before (expecially about Rossetti... I'm blushing)... don't misunderstand me, I'm very keen to critics!
