The wonders of working on the studio's big cintiq vs my bitty 12wx at home. Really cemented WHY I need to invest in at least the one step up.

I recently sprang for a 22HD and I'm really enjoying it - was starting to get frustrated with the hand/eye disconnect of my otherwise awesome Bamboo. Cost a bundle of course, which sucked.

Have you heard about the Yiynova tablet yet? [link] Can't say anything personally, but this is getting good buzz and it costs significantly less. Might be worth looking into before you make a final decision.

Just looked up reviews. Amazon guy is listing a lot of distinct negatives, particularly stuff about the surface, the non removable hella short cables that are only VGA (that's VERY bad). Apparently it compares well to the 12wx, but then the 12wx is the last generation.

I'm looking into the 22hd. I need something light enough to be on my glass desk and not QUITE as chunky as the biggest. And it's nearly got as much work area. How's the weight feel? How's it handle compared to other models?

Figured it was worth a look, at least! I mainly suggested it because I didn't hear about the Yiynova until after I'd already bought my Cintiq - not really buyer's regret, but definitely buyer's wonder, heh heh.

I can't compare the 22HD to other Cintiqs, because it's my first experience with one (the gamble in purchasing it outright was rather terrifying). It's obviously big, but I've got it on a monitor arm, which helps with my posture and generally lets me move it around as I need. Probably the biggest complaint I have is the anti-glare coating on the glass - it creates a noticeable texture, particularly on white. I've heard of this really turning off people who came from previous Cintiqs, between the texture and the slight hit to overall brightness. My normal computer monitor has this kind of coating though, and I can ignore it without too much effort. But if I could change anything, it would be that.

Otherwise, everything has gone pretty well since I got it. Installed the drivers without a hitch, whatever cursor lag there is doesn't bother me (I only notice it on very long strokes), and I got used to the glass parallax faster than I expected to. Heard some things about the 21ux getting rather hot - so far my 22HD hasn't achieved anything past "warm." Very nice in winter, only nominally annoying now that summer weather is creeping in. The hotkeys are okay - got one that kinda sticks, but keyboard shortcuts are more my thing anyway.

All sounds pretty good. It looked like the compact structure of the 12wx in a bigger frame, which is basically what I've been wanting. I might have to reinforce my desk's glass surface with some wood (I can pop off the glass and replace it with another thing) though for safety. Weight is a concern. That and space.
How are the cables?

Kobb In reply to FablePaint [2013-05-10 17:17:37 +0000 UTC]

There are three cables - DVI, USB, and power. It's hard to measure precisely with everything hooked in, but they're at least 5 feet long, probably 6. I've run into cord length issues with speakers before (my tower is on the floor and off to the side a couple feet, as is my power strip), but I've got some cable room to spare with the Cintiq.

Sounds roughly the same as my 12wx then, except it also has this big chunky conversion box that's hella annoying.

Heard about it. I'm always very skeptical of non-Wacom products because Wacom's stuff is hard to break. Where as stuff like Monoprice and similar, however nice they are, friends of mine used them and they just can't handle their computers, certain software, or just stop working. Most art software accounts for Wacom products, not other products. And hobbling my ecosystem is something I don't want to risk without shittons of research.
Still, I will look into it!

Oh, I also love the blink, and the raptor's face at the very roar.

Since you mentioned that: is the smaller cintiq uncomfortable because you are used to drawing big (physically, like at least A4), or is there some other reason?
I'm thinking of buying one, I usually draw very tiny on my normal tablet (but I guess cintiq will feel very different). Thanks in advance for the reply. :3

FablePaint In reply to Zlukaka [2013-05-09 17:41:05 +0000 UTC]

I also draw tiny, but more space offers more control and better composition. The working space available to an artist or animator in Photoshop or Flash is extremely limited due to the chunky UI surrounding the canvas. On a Cintiq 12wx, I'm working on a postcard sized area in flash. On a Cintiq 21UX, the area is closer to page sized.

The difference is noticeable to me when I switch between the monitors at home and then at the studio. If I do even a small droodle at on the big Cintiq, the character is acting more exuberant, more there, more real. The composition is more satisfying as I'm not shifting back and forth constantly to see the the whole picture. I can see it all at once like a real painting. This has a subtle psychological impact while you work and the result is better overall.

For me, it's a matter of more professional industry-level work. What I draw in my sketchbook has more life and energy than what I draw directly on to the computer, and that's largely due to the issue of working space.

Wow, you are right. I forgot about the UI. It would indeed eat up some of that precious space (less in PS, than in Flash, but still). I wish the bigger cintiqs were cheaper. And damn, they don't look very transportable. :[

Thanks a lot! This was very insightful.
