~~Amora~~

Like far too many of her kind, Amora is a love bird who was taken from the wild off Ziziks when she was just barely an adult at 13 months old.
Being separated from her kind was devastating -- as it is for any social bird species, and as a result she became stressed, sick, and ill-tempered.
Carried into the illegal pet trade, she was transported off-world where she spent the next few weeks in cramped and dirty conditions, was insufficiently fed, and was kept with other unfamiliar birds in neighboring cages.

A cruiser accident during landing on planet Zearn* left Amora with a broken wing.
Her cage busted open, as did several others, and when the back hatch on the cruiser came undone she and the other birds made a break for it.
Police and animal control showed up to apprehend the driver and the animals, but Amora got away.
It was snowing in the sketchy city she'd been brought to, and she was smart enough to hide in the snow until everyone was gone.
But this was dangerous, as she wasn't built for cold weather, and was at risk of freezing.
As she deliriously staggered through the snow, it was then that vortian woman Nikita came upon her, and rescued the animal.

Nikita took the bird back to her cruiser and made a little box for her to rest and warm up in, but the yet-unnamed Amora didn't allow any of this easily.
She'd put up a fight when caught, even while sick and hurt, and hungry...and freezing.
Her new captor wasted no time researching food and care for her, and begun the dodgy process of nursing her back to health.
In this time, Amora was loud, demanding, feisty, and constantly vocalizing displeasure.
Discouraging as this was for her caretaker, Nikita figured the animal must have been through a lot, and a broken wing was no doubt a miserable experience.
Never the less, she looked up how to wrap and mend the wing.
Again, not an easy venture with Amora biting and fighting, but eventually Nikita succeeded.
She found the proper food for a love bird as well, and even some temporary supplements to help her build back muscle and fat she'd lost recently.

Over the next few weeks, Amora laid an infertile egg, which let her vortian know she was female.
This was when Nikita finally gave her the name "Amora."
Her wing healed, and although she remained fierce and loud, the bird started to trust Nikita and bond with her.
They spent the next five years together, quickly becoming inseparable, and remain so even as they are now members of The Compromise.
Of course, once onboard, Nikita took it upon herself to round everyone up and briefly educate them about her species, and told them how and how not to treat her -- or any bird.
"No petting of the back of the wings or the chest" was a paramount statement!

~~Personality~~

Like all love birds, Amora is a corvid, making her very unique and intelligent.
She's inquisitive, quick-thinking, and a great problem solver with a keen eye for shiny objects.
Vocal, funny, and something of a giant brat, she isn't shy to let anyone know how she's feeling -- good or bad.
She bites when displeased, but no longer does this to Nikita.
Rather, she simply screams at her companion if she upsets her, which is often done by having her nest of stolen objects robbed and the precious items returned to their owners.

Amora gets into just about everything.
She can open basic latches and locks, and knows how to use tools to get into things she shouldn't.
At night or when needing to be contained, Nikita has to use a more complex lock to keep her in her cage.
For the most part though, she's allowed to freely roam about the ship and even the wilderness when they stop and camp.

Amora has a love-hate relationship with Captain Tim.
She seems to be aware that he is a predatory creature, and also almost seems to know he isn't allowed to hunt her, and taunts him from time to time.
Sometimes she plays with him, sometimes she dive bombs him.
Other times she drops items on him, but has also been caught trying to feed him people snacks.
Tim has no interest in those foods, but it's to be noted that Amora's actions here are well-meaning.
One minute she's sour, then sweet, and has sometimes even been seen trying to pull bits of Tim's fur out for her nest.

Nothing shiny is safe from Amora.
She's stolen everything from keys to tools, from jewelry to silverware, and even someone's personal items for "fun times."~
Nikita wasn't particularly pleased about having to handle that, and neither was Amora for her taking it away from her.

~~Physiology~~

As a smart and observant creature, Amora knows a vast plethora of words and sounds.
She's very chatty and expressive, and even knows phrases, how to mimic voices, and what some items are called.
Much of her talking is just mimicry and nonsensical, but sometimes she can verbally ask for something she needs.
For instance, her repeating "You want some food?" is her way of saying, "I want some food," as she associates this phrase with feeding time.
Her ability to capture other people's voices is downright disturbing at times, as she once mimicked Wander laughing while sitting in the dark, which scared the hell out of Hater, Lamar and Barry one night.

Amora's nest is in a roomy white cage in Nikita's quarters.
It hangs from the ceiling most of the time and has a bowl for food and water, as well as a perch, a swinging rope, and a couple toys.
Typically the door remains open for her to come and go throughout the day, which she does frequently.
She spends the most time in her nest during the day if she's preparing to lay an egg for the month.
The door is closed and locked at bedtime with her inside to encourage her to sleep, and to keep her safe.
When camping or staying elsewhere, Nikita typically brings Amora's cage outside to keep her safe within it at night.

As a female with no mate, Amora lays one or two unfertilized eggs once every month.
She nests a bit during this time, and may sit on the eggs for a few hours or even a day or so.
Afterwords, Nikita usually boils the eggs and feeds them to Amora, giving her the lost nutrients back.
She even eats the shells!
Amora doesn't seem to mind giving birth to a tasty snack for herself, however strange that may be.

As she was properly registered as Nikita’s pet when taken back to Ziziks, Amora was given a metal band on her right leg.
This is an ID ring with a digital encryption containing information about her and Nikita.
This way, if she ever gets lost and apprehended, authorities can see she is a pet, and hopefully get ahold of her guardian.

Amora is roughly six years old.
Her favorite foods are grubs and raw eggs.
