~~Shadow Lands~~

Also referred to as "wraith" apes, this Shadow breed is native to the Shadow Lands that the Mountain of Malefor sits in the center of.
The Shadow is an ancient piece of land that existed long before Malefor's presence, though his imprisonment in the mountain that he corrupted appeared to make the grim, dangerous lands appear even more darkened, and nearly impossible to inhabit.

There is an even larger, more aggressive breed of dreadwing that are native to the Shadow, nicknamed "shadowwings."
This large breed is rumored to be the original species of dreadwing, such as how wolves are the living ancestors of dogs in our world.

~~Curse of the Apes~~

When Malefor was damned to the mountain (with his essence locked in Convexity), he used his dark powers to tempt and corrupt the ape species of the world.
Gaul, a super ape, was risen to power as the kind of the apes, and the right hand man of Malefor.
And though it was Malefor's dark lure that drew them in, Gaul and the apes served not out of honor, but out of greed.
Malefor obviously knew this the entire time, but allowed them to be selfish in order to gain what he needed from them.
Once he was free, he ultimately cursed the entirety of the race that served him.
At least, those who were still in service.
Those select few who sobered up and abandoned the Dark Master's bidding went into hiding, and were spared of the curse due to a lack of spiritual recognition on the side of his evil.

The cursed apes were turned into undead beings, spirits trapped in zombified skeletons.
They were miserable, locked in their abominable bodies.
Cursed apes were wiped out in the apocalypse event, as Spyro's cleansing of Malefor's evil from the world did away with all his artificial creations, as well as his curses.
Their bones can still be found lying about.

Dark gems still remain in small portions around the world, but can be taken care of by destroying and praying over them.
Any who spot a dark gem are encouraged to destroy it immediately, or tell someone who can destroy it.
To hoard or keep one secret is now a crime in certain civilizations, and can be punishable.

~~Before the Curse~~

When Malefor was on the rise and seducing the apes, not all of them fell for his spell.
Due to the potent nature of his toxic masculinity, only male apes were affected by his spell.
All females found themselves terrified of the energy, and quickly sought magic to send what remained of their kind to another realm.
In other words, they recognized the severity of the darkness getting ready to overtake the earth, and wanted no part in it.
Some males managed to resist as well, be it when seduction was first starting, or later on in service.
So, all the ape females and a handful of males retreated, and many families were torn apart.
Mates, fathers, sons, brothers, friends, all turning their backs on the ones they once loved, all for the sake of greed.
Needless to say, there was much heartbreak, but those who remained good carried on regardless.
Apes who gave up servitude in the midst of the wars were trapped on earth and forced into hiding.

~~Today~~

The Shadow Lands are basically the way they used to be before Malefor had influence over the mountain, untainted, though left with statues and striking evidence that a powerful evil once resided there.

After Malefor was defeated, the apes that had left earth returned, and are now trying to re-orient themselves back into their territories.
Earthy apes are moving back into the forests and Swamps, cold apes to the frozen regions, tropical apes to the tropics, hot apes to the deserts and volcanic islands, wraith apes to the Shadow, and Concurrent apes to the electrical lands.
Their numbers are 2/3rds smaller than before, but they are okay.

Apes face much oppression and judgment today on behalf of the mistakes the rest of their kind made.
Dragons that have returned, as well as every other species, pretty much hold them in a state of contempt and skepticism.
The apes are sympathetic of this, but also live in fear of being attacked.
And sometimes, sadly, they are attacked by others, driven into finding new homes.
Thankfully, there are those who recognize the good of those who remain, and stand up for them.
In the decades to come, apes will be able to re-orient themselves into prominent society and mix in with crowds of other species once again.

~~Tiers~~

Apes and dogs are two living species known to have biological "tiers" marking a difference in size.
Trolls and ogres existed by tiers as well, but with their two different identifications being their only definitive tiers, along with supers.

First-tier refers to the smallest breed of dogs and apes.
During the dark wars, first-tier apes were appointed as soldiers.

Second-tier apes and dogs are medium-sized and a tad less common.
In the war, second-tier apes were group leaders of soldiers.

Third-tier dogs and apes are the largest kind and are less common.
Third-tier apes were commanders in the war, appointed to sectors of groups and overseeing all activity within them.

There are sometimes "supers" in these species, as there was with the ghouls.
Skabb the Scavenger was a super dog with an unfortunately impaired intellect, as he was constantly manipulated by a pair of sibling fishlings.
Gaul was a super ape appointed by Malefor as the ape King.
Supers are very rare and are only born to third-tiers.
It's not uncommon for mothers to die birthing supers, sadly.
What causes a super to develop is unknown.

Why were they greedy in the first place? What did they want?Β

Canonically speaking, they appeared to want power and control over the world -- which is why they were cursed.
They served Malefor, but only to further their own desires.
Malefor's corruption really instilled this in them, ironically ;/
