Description "She breathes the soul of the ocean"... a continuation of the idea that was also behind "Guardian of the Sea". This is the last of my three watercolor finals, and even though it's the least finished, it's my favorite. This is a concept I've been coming back to since 2002, and so far my favorite execution of it. There's still a lot of work needing to be done to the hair, like adding texture to the surface waves to separate them from the underwater portion the other dolphins are swimming in. The splashes and wave highlights didn't integrate as smoothly as I hoped, but I'll keep working on it when I have more time and energy.

eek this is absolutely my favorite picture you've ever done ! Everything about it really captivates me. The woman seems to naturally beautiful and in tune with the world around her, and I can't get over how her hair is also like waves. It doesn't look like water, and it doesn't look like hair, it looks seamlessly like both at the same time! i don't think I've ever seen anything like that pulled off so well I also love the symbols in the back, the dolphins, her earrings... oh everything!! awesome work!

lol! thanks, love, it's still a WIP, but that absolutely means a lot to me! this painting is probably the project that excited me more than any other this semester by the time I started it, I'm just sad the semester ended before I could finish it. But finish it I will!

Even though it's not done, it's really my favorite thing you've painted I get such nice feelings from it! It makes me want to go swim with the fishes (not in the dead sense, but in the actual swimming around in the ocean with fish sense!) I live only about 2 hours from the sea, but it's a bit cold for that at the moment Maybe over the summer

please do finish it! I know whenever it's no longer required to do I tend to not do it, so I hope you're not the same way hehe. I'd really love to see it completed.

and if it's too cold to go swimming, you'd better tell me you live in New England or the Carolinas, because my sister and I have been known to swim Florida's Atlantic side in January!!!

well, fortunately for me, even though I'm not attending school next semester, my teacher's still making me finish it for a scholarship competition, so I'm lucky to still have enough of a foot left in my behind it might actually get done!

Wow! The colors are lovely, the watercolor is especially watery () The rendering of the model is very sensitive. The composition is very nice too. Hey, I can tell when you are doing something you enjoy. They turn out better and have more heart. This is awesome.

thanks, love, I actually hoped you would like it! of all the school projects I didn't manage to finish before critique, this is the one that I would love to continue working on during vacation, I really like the way it's going. a couple things I need to change with the spray, but I have so much work to do with the water anyway it will probably take care of itself, and then my teacher suggested going back with white gouache or watered down acrylic and spraying through a straw so it looks more naturalistic (since the masking fluid produced some disappointing results). Part of me wants to build up more contrast in the skin tones, but part of me really adores that soft, watery 1970's look, so I don't know what I'm going to do yet! but thanks so much for the kind words and for the ! It always makes me happy when you like something!

I'm with you on the watery look but I agree with Teach about the gouache through a straw though. Sounds perfect! I hope I get to see the changes.

yeah, I really want to finish this... in fact, it's the one painting I would even consider completely starting over to fix the problems, but I don't think it will come to that!

Problems?

lol, just with the spray! and I think I'd like to move one of the bottom dolphins closer to the left side, but that's not such a biggie. but I think I should be able to reintegrate what's there of the spray now and then splatter white acrylic over the top later, and that should work fine!
