Back in the workroom, Elina gathers what she needs to test her theory, but the impression withstands the most rational questioning she can bring to bear. The Scholar is so intent on her inner considerations that she has snatched up the gremlin's cage and taken several steps toward the exit before she senses the profound change in the atmosphere around her. The darkness, which has previously held the weight of malefic intelligence in constant observation and brooding, is now silent and empty. "Almost as if,..." she pauses, uncertain, "as if it was never there. Or perhaps it has disbanded. Or,... something else." Already rapid with the excitement of her discovery, her heartbeat thumps powerfully in her breast.

"To Luther Vandermoor," she orders the runemote. "Stop for nothing and no one. Guide him to everything I have found, and I will follow if I can." So dispatched, the wisp flits away in the darkness as Elina magically lights the nearby candle as a substitute light source. "Let us check once more to see if the Seeress managed to leave us any more hints."

Elina was drawn using the references provided by Emily at Feathered-pics . Having refigured the stats a couple days ago, Elina now has the most appearances of any character in the storyline, and a large part of that is due to the fun and excellent and well-expressed images Emily's given me to work with. If you like what you see, please let her know. Thanks, Emily!

Enjoy!

Note: Bookbinding and Demon's Due are a work of fantasy and fiction. The artist/creator in no way condones real mistreatment of this kind toward any woman or man, by living person, gremlin, plant, assassin, ratman, viscous fluid, programmed device, animated home furnishings, or otherworldly spiritual beings. Furthermore, the artist opposes the marginalizing and restriction of women in general by any institution, political and/or religious, including those which have individual women amongst their membership touting/promoting their own happiness within that institution as evidence that ALL women should feel the same way. This includes the religion I was raised in and which I have utterly discarded from my life over this and other issues.

Just some idle speculation....

We know that Gil (Gilgamesh?) the lonely 'Loater was once occupied by the dominant Jervil fragment, as well as his own lesser one, and that both were pounded out of him by Elina. What I'm curious about is whether Gil's status as former "wayside inn" has affected him in such a way as to render him potentially sensitive to the Hellbinder's approach, and perhaps even to allow him to establish a connection with the hive-mind inside Ole Helly. That could render his proximity problematic for Elina, especially if Gil manages to recall who it was who lobotomized him and stuffed him in a bird cage.

looking at Gil,I had this weird flash of him  having a Hercules moment, and bending open the bars of his cage...

I seriously hope the Hellbinder gives the little gremlin a chance to participate in Elina's capture...

Hmmm.  I like multiple choice.  So the evil presence is gone as if (a) it was never there?  Nope.  We can safely rule that out.  Or (b) it's just "disbanded?"  Not sure she's feeling quite that lucky.  Or (c) 'something else.'  Yeah, 'something else' is definitely one way of putting it.  Let's go with that one.

So she knows that the hellbinder calamity is not only possible but perhaps even probable, and she knows she's at ground zero of Evil Incorporated, yet she's a whole lot calmer than any rational person should be ... I'm wondering if she has a plan, a secret weapon, or is just insanely focused?

I personally suspect a little too much valerian and chamomile in her herbal tea. Calms you right down, that does, especially when you drink it in massive quantities from cups the size of serving bowls.

Too much Valerin?  Never!  It's impossible!

Oh wait.  "Valerian."  Never mind.

Valerin knocks me out, too, but in an entirely different way, and not like that unfortunate fellow at the Fair Harvest!

Poor little guy, such a plaintive expression - hopefully he'll be free to catch and tie up beautiful women very soon.

I suppose that since all malevolent energy is gathered in the demon thing the gremlin is now "clean". So Elina can use him to wash her dishes, doing all possible household chores and for preparing the famous "wormloot stew".

I can't imagine what she would need the Gremlin for but I'm sure the end results will be amusing.

And I'm sure the evil basement intelligence definitely disbanded. That whack on the head must have neutronized it. A total particle reversal. She's got nothing to worry about.

"nothing to worry about"
*snort*
Besides that shambling monstrosity just around the corner, of course ... naaah, she'll be fine.

the sight of the goblin in a bird cage is quite possibly the most humours thing I've seen in a long time
