Description
Commission for of a forest background for a battle screen in an RPG he's working on.The process for this piece of pixel art was a bit strange. It started out with this black and white sketch- [link]
Then it got a bit more refined with some harder pixels. After I got the general idea correct (it needed to be more linear like what you see now instead of like the sketch) I did a color overlay to figure out the hues and pick my palette from.
On above layers set to normal mode, and using the palette of 90 colors chosen from the color overlay, I started doing some rough pixeling.
After I got things divided properly into flat colors, I duplicated the image, flattened everything and completed the dithering.

Is it okay If I use this in my game, or would you rather me ask him because he's the commissioner (either way you'd go into the credits for making the pic)

I can't give permission for you to use it. You will have to contact the commissioner for the right to use it. If you can't get a hold of him, I'd suggest not using it in any way because that could be seen as copyright infringement, especially since the game it is for is a commercial venture.
You can always hire to have a unique image done for your game.
