Sitting on a sofa and reading a book at the Kira Investigation Headquarters on the morning of your birthday was anything but normal. Though, nothing was normal with your new friend around. It's true that the Kira case had been solved, but thanks to your friend, no one really died. Hearing the clicking of a computer mouse, you glanced up from your favorite 'Twilight' series book to stare over at the famous detective L, whose eyes were currently glued to a computer screen. Though you had only known him for a few months, you began to develop feelings for him, and just as you cared for him, you knew deep down that he cared for you as well. The only problem was, he was always so busy! Every day, there was some new case for him to solve, and he barely talked to you or anyone besides his clients. Today though, you were determined to see if L truly cared for you. After all, it was birthday today, there's no way he could forget about it! Your train of thought was broken when you heard your name being yelled.
"Tessa!!!!" your name was yelled from the stairway.
"Tessa!!! Come on!!" your friend jumped the stairs and onto the ground, and jumped on the sofa across from you.
"Tessa! Come on! It's your-"
"Shhh!!!" you responded.
"But it's your-"
"Shhh!!!" you repeated. Your very loud and talkative friend Brittany gave you a strange look.
"Tessa, just what exactly are you up to?" You sighed, "I want to see if he remembers" you explained in a hushed tone while glancing over at the detective. Brittany looked at him as well and whispered, "So he hasn't said anything to you at all yet? That's just rude…" You shook your head. "I know, I can't believe it either. You'd think he'd take a break from work at least one day. More specifically on my birthday." Your friend shook her head. "Of course he should" she smirked, "after all you two are madly in love with each other."
"We are not! You little liar!" you replied indignantly. Brittany merely giggled in response.
"Oh go run off to Light. Ever since the investigation ended, you two have been inseparable." It was your turn to tease her.
"Hey, shut yo face!!" She yelled, trying to cover up her embarrassment. As if on cue, the devil himself, Light, came walking down the stairway. It's not that you didn't like Light. He and your friend were together, so naturally you wanted to get along with him. It just that one, he thought he was better than L, two, he always found ways to mock everyone, and three, he was just one crazed fruit loop.
"So this is where you've run off to Brittany." He said, while walking over to where she was sitting.  Though, instead of sitting down, he turns to you.
"Oh yea, Tessa, Hap-Ow!!!" He yelled, while rubbing his left cheek. You had decided to shut him up by throwing 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' at his face.
"Shhh!!!" you responded, while trying to hold back your laughter.
"What the heck is this" he growled while picking up the book, "Why are you reading about a gay and sparkly vampire getting an overly emotional teen pregnant? It's a pathetic excuse for literature. The werewolves in this book act like lap dogs and the vampires become nothing more than glompable males for fangirls. If I could still kill, they'd all be dead. "
"You just can't understand a book of pure win, now can you?" you retort.
"Yea" Brittany chimes in, "Tessa, we should ignore Justin Bieber's opinion."
"Who are you calling Justin Bieber?" Light sneered, "I'm not gay, so therefore I can't possibly be him."
"Hmmm, I don't know" you responded, "I mean you have almost the same hairstyle."
"Also" Brittany added, "Your name spelled backwards is… I'm a gay."
"Ok, you're officially done for" Light growled while tackling your friend. You couldn't help but laugh as you watched the two wrestle. Of course, the tussle didn't last long since your friend had the upper hand with being magical and all.
"Hey Tessa!!! Why don't we go out shopping for a bit? I mean it's pretty lame just sitting around here all day." Brittany spoke while sitting on Light who was currently stuck on the ground.
"Sounds like fun to me!" you responded while jumping off the couch and heading to the door.
"Count me out." Light grumbled while pushing your friend off of him and standing up.
"Awwwwhhh," Brittany whined while pulling out her car keys, "You're no fun!" You and Brittany head out of the headquarters to outside, where her car was parked on the curb. Technically, neither of you were allowed to drive. She only had a permit and you hadn't even started driving lessons yet. However, you friend had modified her Japanese rx8 car. It was now built to fly to different places and worlds, and had an autopilot for driving, so there was no worry about being caught. You hopped into the passenger seat while Brittany set up the autopilot, and eventually the car was off to the mall.
Once you and Brittany arrived at the mall, the two of you had a crazy time. Your friend took you on a shopping spree as a gift, giving you tons of cash to spend. You tried on tons of clothes and shopped through dozens of accessories at Hot Topic and Delias. Then you found a ton of anime stuff at the Fye store. For lunch, you had managed to find a stand in the mall that sold Churros, rainbow bacon strips, and to drink, Peach water. You almost died of happiness.
"This stand right here knows my life!" you yelled to Brittany.
"Sure seems like it!" She laughed and bought you your food.
You were sitting down and enjoying your favorite food, when suddenly your friend's cellphone began to ring, singing out "And I was like… Baby, baby, baby oooooh, like baby, baby, baby noooooooo."
You nearly fell on the ground from laughing so hard. "Oh my gosh Brittany! Why is Justin Bieber your ring tone?!!"
"Hold that thought." She glared at her phone as she answered it. "Give me one good reason Light why I shouldn't kill you for changing my ringtone to Gay Bieber! ...Well that's a very good reason… really? ....Already? ....Alright, see you soon, change my ring tone again and you'll die… bye!"
"So what was that all about?!" You laugh.
"So apparently Light changed my ring tone. He's going to pay. Also we are wanted back at headquarters."
"Why?"
"Who knows? But come on we better get going. Besides I don't think my car could fit anymore stuff if you bought anything else!" Brittany laughed. The two of you skipped off back to her car and drove back to headquarters. Outside waiting for the two of you was Light.
"So Brittany, are you broke?"  Light chuckled as he led you and your friend inside. Suddenly Brittany turned around and stopped you from walking any further.
"Wait!" she yelled.
"What?" you stopped walking and looked at her. Then, your vision went dark.
"Hey what's going on?!" you yelled confused.
"Thought you might like a blindfold buddy." Brittany giggled as she took your hand so you wouldn't crash into any walls.
"Oh by the way, I decided to kidnap one of your friends while you were out and bring her here." You heard Light's voice say.
"Really? Which friend?" You asked with excitement in your voice.
"I'll give you a hint. She is most definitely a fake blonde." Light replied.
Eventually Brittany had stopped walking. You felt her let go of her hand and then walk behind you. Gently she put her hands on your shoulders and guided you into the room.
"Okay," Brittany began, "3…2…1..!" Your blindfold was removed in a swift motion.
"Surprise!" everyone in the room yelled. Well at least you thought it was everyone. Almost all of the task force members were there. The only ones missing were Mello, Matsuda, and…L. You were sad at first, but when you looked down at the ground you gasped.
"Oh my gosh, who did this!!!" You almost cried of happiness. On the ground, lying out in front of you was a giant heart formed from pieces of candy, and 'Happy Birthday Tessa' spelled out in the middle of it. You turned your head towards Light.
"Hey don't look at me," Light said, "I don't have any candy, I only prefer potato chips."
"No, it wasn't Light who did this." You looked behind you to see where the very familiar voice was coming from.
The familiar voice continued, "It was I who did this for you." You turned back around and came face to face with your favorite detective, L. "Happy Birthday Tessa." A rare, yet genuine  smile appeared on his face, and the only rational action you could think of was to joyfully wrap your arms around him, and hug him. Although L wasn't used to showing or receiving affection, he gently returned the embrace. You enjoyed the special moment with him until you heard fits of giggles in the corner. You and L separated and you turned around to see you friend giggling.
You playfully glared at her "What's so funny?"
"Oh my gosh, I'm sorry for ruining the moment, but the hug just looked awkward. L, you need to be a man and learn how to show more affection!" She laughed.
You then felt someone poke your shoulder and turned around to see… Stephanie! Another best friend of yours, that you hadn't seen her in awhile since you came here.
"Stephanie!" You yelled cheerfully as you practically glomped her. "I've missed you soooo much!"
"It's nice to see you too," She replied, "But um, you're kind of squeezing me to death here."
"Oh my bad!" You laughed as you let go of her. Then the two of you began to talk about each other's lives, anime, vocaloid songs, and why ponies are so awesome. Suddenly, an important question came up in your mind.
"Hey Brittany, where's the cake?" You yelled to her from across the room.
"Oh that," Brittany replied, "It should be here soon, Matsuda and Mello went to go retrieve it and wheel it in. Actually, oh look here it is now!" You turned your head towards the door, and almost passed out at what you saw. Matsuda and Mello had brought in one large, multilayered cake, and its design was shocking. Truth is, there was no way to tell that it was actually a regular cake. From the looks of it, it looked like a giant pile of assorted meat. You smiled widely at the amazing sight. Each layer had a different type of meat, ranging from sausage at the bottom, ham in the middle, and steak at the top. Fifteen candles were placed in the steak and were brightly lit.
Brittany laughed and said, "Just so you know, yes this is a cake, not actual meat. We just thought since you love meat so much that you're cake should look like different meats put together in a pile. And now everyone, let's all sing the corny yet totally traditional birthday song!!" At your friend's cue, everyone in the room began to sing 'happy birthday' to you. Afterwards you made a wish and blew out the candles. While enjoying your meat cake, you sat on the sofa and opened up birthday presents. Stephanie gave you a magnificent drawing and a visa gift card. Mello gave you one of those big ass Hershey's chocolate bars, and Matt bought you a Harvest Moon game. Light got you a new digital camera with video and Matsuda gave you a funny book about how to be a ninja. You found it a little odd and sad that L didn't give you anything, but you let it pass, and enjoyed the rest of your awesome party. All too soon it began to get late, and everyone started heading to bed, including Stephanie who was allowed to stay the night. Soon it was just you and L, with Brittany and Light talking and cuddling in the corner.
"Hey, you two, go to your own bedroom!" You laughed.
"But-but we aren't even doing anything!" Your friend whined. You watched as you saw Light whisper something in her ear that made Brittany giggle.
"Oh alright," she said, "Let's leave the couple alone" She laughed.
"Brittany!" you yelled in embarrassment.
"Kidding, kidding!" She replied and walked over to you to give you a hug. You thanked her and Light for the party and gifts and watched them head up the stairs.
"Tessa." You heard your name called.
"Yes L?"  You asked, turning to face him.
"This morning, did you honestly think I had forgotten about your birthday?" He asked, his eyes gazing into yours.
You turned away from his gaze. "Honestly, yes I did. I mean, you're always so busy working on all these cases, and I barely get to talk to you. Sometimes I feel that you don't really care about me that much and it hurts to think that, because well… I like you L a lot… I really do."
L then looked down at the floor, and you feared he didn't feel the same way. You were about to apologize for saying that, when suddenly, L grasped your hand with his and looked you in the eyes.
"Tessa, I'm afraid you've been mistaken. It is true that I have much work to do every day, and that it's hard for me to talk to you, but I want to make this clear right now." L took a step forward and leaned in, his face close to yours. "I do care about you Tessa. Every day I find myself having these feelings of wanting to be near you. These feelings have grown over the past months, and I figured out that… I like you too." L's face came closer and closer to yours. Slowly, you closed your eyes, your heart pounding with excitement. L's eyes closed as well as he softly pressed his lips to yours. Your mind was filled with totally bliss and it felt like time had frozen. When L pulled away, you opened your eyes and smiled. No words were needed to explain how happy you were. L put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a small wrapped box.
"For you." He said as he placed the present in your hands. Slowly you tore off the wrapping paper and opened the box. Inside the box was a necklace with a heart. You pulled it out and held it in front of you. Engraved on the front of the heart were the words 'Forever Yours'. You smiled and turned it over. Engraved on the back was the letter 'L'.
"Thank you so much L. This is the best present I have ever gotten for my birthday." L took the necklace from you and placed it around your neck. Slowly he leaned in and gave you another long kiss. When he pulled away, he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you into a tight embrace. You sighed happily and hugged back. L leaned his head on your shoulder and whispered in your ear "I will always be here for you Tessa. And I'll find a way to make time to spend just with you." L kissed your cheek and gently picked you up. He carried you up to your room and laid you on your bed.
You looked up at him and said "Promise me you'll stay with me tonight?"
L smiled and lay down next to you. "I promise to stay with you every night." You sighed happily as you felt L wrap his arms around you and pulled you close to him. That night you slept peacefully, dreaming of the future you would have with your new boyfriend. This birthday was the start of your everlasting relationship with L and was a day you would never forget.

L leaned his head on your shoulder and whispered in your ear "I will always be here for you Tessa. And I'll find a way to make time to spend just with you." L kissed your cheek and gently picked you up. He carried you up to your room and laid you on your bed.
You looked up at him and said "Promise me you'll stay with me tonight?"
L smiled and lay down next to you. "I promise to stay with you every night." You sighed happily as you felt L wrap his arms around you and pulled you close to him. That night you slept peacefully, dreaming of the future you would have with your new boyfriend. This birthday was the start of your everlasting relationship with L and was a day you would never forget.
