Description
Unlike the typical rectangular visitor room with glass partitions, Evan was led into a small room with a table and two chairs in the middle. Guard Kate secured her handcuffs to the table and stood silently to the side. After a while, Evan saw the door opposite her open and her boyfriend, whom she had missed and worried about day and night, walked in. He smiled at Evan and sat down in the chair opposite her. Evan felt a bit ashamed and didn't want her boyfriend to see her in prison uniform with handcuffs and shackles, but seeing his smile again was more important than anything else.
"You look much thinner than before. Life must be very difficult for you now," he said.
"It's okay. I'm slowly getting used to my life now. After all, there's a good chance I'll be here for the rest of my life," she replied.
Her boyfriend fell silent for a moment, his face showing an expression of not knowing how to comfort her.
"I'm sorry, Evan. I haven't come to see you in a long time. I mainly wanted to accompany you on this special day. Also, there's something important I want to tell you," he said.
Evan tensed up at hearing this. Something important? She might have to go through the same pain that Mary went through more than 20 days ago. But she bit her lip and tried to appear calm.
"Evan, with the help of your friend Lucy and her boyfriend Martin, we obtained almost all of the police investigation materials from your case. We found a few small inconsistencies, which are not enough to overturn the prosecution's charges, but they could be an opportunity to discover the truth and change the verdict. So please don't give up. You can protect yourself here. Although it may take a long time, I believe you have hope of leaving here. Please take care of yourself," he said.
Evan was very surprised but also extremely happy. Her worries were completely unfounded.
"I will," she nodded.
"I don't think I can fully understand what you mean right now. So you'll come to see me here again in the first quarter of next year? Is that right?" she asked.
"Of course. I'll keep coming to see you as long as they allow it," he replied.
"So you believe I'm innocent and want to wait for me to get out of here?" Evan regretted saying this.
She was too direct, and she had no idea whether she could get out of here. Asking her boyfriend to wait for her was an excessive demand, and even if she got a promise, it would be useless.
Her boyfriend seemed to understand what she meant and said, "The answer is YES for now. But I don't know what the answer will be in five years, so I've given myself a five-year task. During these five years, I don't want to think about this question. I want to focus more on your case and try to get the court to hold another trial. Can you understand what I'm saying?"
"I understand. Thank you, William," Evan said. Obviously, she needed these things more than eternal promises right now.
"If you find that there is no hope of salvaging my case, please don't keep obsessing over it. You deserve a better life." she said
"I will, but you deserve a better life too, much better than this" he replied.
They talked for nearly 1.5 hour, On the way back, although it was snowing outside, she didn't seem to feel the cold at all. It was as if she could see the scenery of spring when everything bloomed in March next year, in this vast expanse of white snow.
