I saw a show on NatGeo about this chimp. The zoo keepers had a really good relationship with him and want to bring him back home. What triggered it: He got out of his comfort zone and when he encountered strange humans, he did what any dominant male chimp does- attack and mutilate the face, hands, and genitals. Apparently, all the chimps at the compound were taken in as orphans after their mums were shot for bush meat. Then they went through 3 seperate gun battles fought by competing guerilla fighter factions- right on zoo grounds. He was a bit shell shocked basically and his behavior explainable. There have been no other attacks linked to him since the one day. A good thing came out of the situation. The American guy who saved the African guy are like brothers now. The details are really sick though.

Reminds me of the monkey or gorilla from Poe's story.
