Description It was a cloudless sky...

1 hour and 58 minutes exposure.

I'm not very pleased with the layout but it's not so easy in darkness.

i think the composition of the shot is actually pretty good. having polaris in the top corner of the shot with the trails moving diagonally creates a nice balance with the trees in the centre. it would have been nice if the tree on the right hand side wasn't there so maybe next time go with your chainsaw

I agree with you about the tree on the right side

Thank you for the constructive comment!

How did you meter this shot, how come to decide on the 2 hour exposure? Trial and error?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FatalBite In reply to tourofnature [2008-09-07 09:47:47 +0000 UTC]

This was my first "serious" star trail photo and the exposure was trial and error. I thought 2 hours would be long enough for those long trails and I think I succeeded in it.

tourofnature In reply to FatalBite [2008-09-09 18:48:09 +0000 UTC]

I would say you definitely succeeded! No metering techniques? Just guessed 2 hours eh? Congrats.

Glad to hear that

Yes, basically I guessed the exposure time. I estimated two hours would be long enough.

amazing, i've been trying startrails for a while and just can't get them right, what was your f/stop?

FatalBite In reply to tobiashibbs [2008-06-21 20:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!
This was one of my first "serious" star trail photos.
The aperture was f/4.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tobiashibbs In reply to FatalBite [2008-06-22 00:34:44 +0000 UTC]

i find when i use low f/stops, they come out way overexposed

FatalBite In reply to tobiashibbs [2008-06-22 15:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Are there city lights near you when you shoot star trails? And how long exposures are you taking?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tobiashibbs In reply to FatalBite [2008-06-22 19:00:45 +0000 UTC]

for these shots: [link] [link] i didn't think there were many lights around but if there are should i just use a higher f/stop like 13 or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FatalBite In reply to tobiashibbs [2008-06-23 15:09:15 +0000 UTC]

You should shoot in RAW so you can change the white balance settings easily.
And shoot using the biggest aperture possible f/2.8 would be good. I wish my wide angle had the possibility for that.

beautiful photo!!!
how did you get such a long exposure? i think my DSLR only goes up to 30 seconds and then theres the bulb setting, but you have to hold that, and i dont think you would sit and hold the button for close to 2 hours! lol

FatalBite In reply to DarkAlaria69 [2007-12-05 01:31:47 +0000 UTC]
