I should have explained! Selkies are Celtic mermaids basically. They were seals in the water, but could remove their skin and become beautiful women. If a man could find the selkie's skin and bury it he could keep her on land! Otherwise they would put back on their seal skin and return to the sea.

I only know bits and pieces myself. I always mean to research... I first heard of selkies through a movie called Ondine.
