Day 29
I got into Petalburg city just as Dad was closing up the Gym for the night. Since I was planning on heading to Route 103 in the morning, I took him up on the offer for a ride home in his new Jeep (his old one we sold back in Johto, didn't have space for vehicle transport on the ship, and this new job had better pay than his old one) and we called Mom to inform her of the additional place setting.
I had only been gone a month, but the way Mom acted would have a third party convinced I'd been lost for a year. Mom had prepared an amazing fried rice and Sitrus Berry chicken and I ate like a Snorlax freed from a diet plan. Until then, it hadn't struck me that I'd not had a home cooked meal in a month, just restaurant food. Even if I'd tried cooking it would have paled compared to Mom's masterpieces.
I told Mom all about my adventurers through Hoenn while we ate. I did, however, purposefully leave out everything involving Team Aqua or Magma, and certainly didn't tell her the full story about our tragic volcanic altercation. I don't want Mom concerned about my safety, because I know she is already and no litany of stories of Mickey's vigilance or Lucius' guardianship will assuage her of that maternal instinct. I see no reason to make it worse for her with tales of how I am becoming the Sheriff of Hoenn at sixteen.
After dinner Mom insisted we go to the living room and spend time meeting each of my Pokemon. She was very eager to see who I chose to make companions. I sent them all out at once, which made for a crowded living space since most of my team was at least the size of a short person, or in Moof's case had rather difficult to fold wings that took up a lot of space. I'd never really taken them out of their pokeballs in a more confined interior space; that three foot bug looked a lot bigger in my parent's living room than he did outdoors. I vaguely informed her of a very tough battle Moof fought to explain his disfigurement. I think she bought it, but something about the look on Dad's face told me he wasn't convinced.
I think out of all my team, Mickey and Dan were Mom's favorites. Mickey's willingness to help with the dishes were definitely points in his favor; I'm not sure why he was, I didn't train that into him it is just who he is it seems. And Dan was the only member of the team still a foot tall so Mom naturally found him adorable. She did change her tone temporarily when he started thrashing around the room playfully and knocked into the end table. Predictably, it broke. Wood does that when 130 lbs of steel accidentally tumbles into it. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd trash a car with a proper running start. Those big blue baby eyes got him forgiven aggravatingly quickly; but then, how does one punish an armored pokemon? A cast iron frying pan would be underwhelming at best...
But I digress. Later that night Dad did call me out on my lie while in my room. He was careful not to condemn my sense of adventure, but warned me to be extra cautious on the road ahead. What happened to Moof would only be the beginning because he told me the eastern half of Hoenn had a lot tougher trainers than my current itinerary provided. I already sensed it; Dad merely confirmed my concern. The road ahead would have to be traveled deliberately, with care in every step.
I left in the morning with a breakfast so filling I think a slugma would have beaten me to Route 103 thrice. Now that I was allowed to utilize my water type pokemon to traverse water, I figured that small river crossing would make for the fastest route to Slateport, where I could begin a sea-faring training regime to get everyone but Dan stronger. He'd have to wait. I planned for it to be particularly beneficial to Moof. Without trees to collide with, he could get some more flying exercise in safely. Seeing as the majority of my training would be on water today, I allowed Dan to have the vanguard against the trainers on the other side of the river. Not only did he come out victorious, he came out doubled in size as a lairon. He is much more impressive now, that's for sure. My own personal tank.
The rest of the day was spent on the waters of Route 109 beyond Slateport's beach, where I also caught a tentacool I named Tempestra. She's a weird one but then what tentacool isn't. It's nice to run into a pokemon I already know about though. Tomorrow I will traverse the water routes to Dewford and continue training.
