Description

Run baby run!!
Whoo boy, this took me... quite a while haha.

Mainly because of stalling. I didn't animate much in clip studio before because the PRO version have limited frames and frankly... I get really frustrated when I can't get the timing just right. I'm that perfectionist. But I upgraded to Clip Studio EX in the last sale and it has unlimited animation features! Really cool if y'all wanna try some more serious animation!

This is the first fully fledged animation I make (aside from side tests), and I really wanted to try my hand at doing rolling backgrounds. It looks pretty decent for a first time 8)

I would appreciate any critique!

Independantly drawn frames for Mellow are exactly 5, but all in all it has eleven frames.

Here's the process if you wanna check it out!

I'm not much of a critquer but, here goes anyways.

The animation is choppy though I love the smooth rolling of the background possibly a few more frames of mellow running would have been able to smooth it out a bit more. Though you did say you haven't done something like this in a while. I can say that maybe pauses in his blinking would have also made the running a little more natural? Like blinking every bit, though that would have been a tad bit more difficult to animate. All in all for not having done something like this for a bit it looks amazing!

(Run mellow! Nyoom!)

I'm sorry if this comes out as rude
But it's not meant to be

The animation looks rather choppy, so does the background moving with it.
I see your style is more detailed so it makes it harder to animate your characters since they are detailed.

The ears don't move at all either, and from what I've heard while being in the group is that the ears can move, they kind of look like bones are preventing them from moving.

I think that if you added a bit more frames to the animation and made the background go a bit smoother it would look much more appealing.

I think you did a pretty good job on this animation! Both the proportions and the markings stay consistent. The movement is also more complex than the usual run cycles i see on this site (people often animate only the legs moving). I think the head bobbing and moving wings really help make the scene more dynamic.

However, the animation here seems a bit choppy and jumpy. If you want to make it look more smooth I'd suggest adding more inbetween frames or, if you want to keep the motion fast, smear frames (if you don't know what a smear frame is I think this video explains them well: youtu.be/vMvJiKu-93g )

Overall I think you've done a great job! The expression and movement shows the wyngling's emotions perfectly and the art itself is very pleasant to look at e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>
Keep up the great work!

I'm not great at critique, but as someone who considers them self semi decent at animation I thought I'd share my thoughts!
I find the animation a but choppy, especially when Mellow's paws flick upwards into his belly, a few more inbetweens would do this animation great, though as you had said, you haven't done much animation so this is pretty good considering!
perhaps a little more movement in the ears would add more appeal to the eye as well, the ears would probably move with the head, and since his head is bobbing up and down the small added movement would fit nicely~
The thing that sets off the animation the most I'd say would be the feet, the back feet specifically, his feet should glide/move across the ground for a few frames before going into the air again, and would make the whole cycle look more complete.
Overall though I do think this is a great animation, and with more practice you'll be an amazing animator in no time~
apologies if i seemed a little too harsh, just wanna try and help you improve and as I said critique is not my strong point haha

Thank you very much for the input, I don't think it's harsh at all. I do admit that I didn't use as many frames as I could due to lazyness, only enough for it to look kinda decent. I'll keep all the points in mind and perhaps work in making a nicer run/walk cycle in the future as practice, with more effort and frames!

As an animation student, I say this is very well done~ The proportions stay actuate throughout the whole cycle and the movement is very expressive.
If I were to suggest something, I would add a few more frames with as he comes down. The front legs move down, but the back legs seem to have less imbetweens, and seem almost jerky in their moment. I would also maybe slow the background down a tiny bit, at least the grass.
But other than that, great job! You can tell that hes running, and you even got great head bob, which some people in my class tend to forget.
Keep up the great work! <3

Run forest run.

But seriously this is an amazing animation! I usually perfer to use firealpaca for animation since it's free, but I never new clip studio EX had extra animation features. :0

Aww, thank you! I personally have never tried firealpaca before - I only really use Clip Studio because of my general love for the program. You can get some really neat, professional features, and imo it's worth investing in the full thing, specially when they do plenty of sales very often!

There's only one downside imo that is that you cannot save the animation with transparency. I have only animated in photoshop, CSP and GraphicsGale (for pixel art) so far, and CSP is the best I've tried (not speaking of programs who involve vectors of course).

Well you should defiantly try Firealpaca! It's free to use and light weight. It also saves your progress automatically online as well! <3

I often use it for animations via onion skin mode. Β They have an option where you can export the files on to a folder, and if you have a transparent background it'll be transparent and saved as png. Β

Firealpaca is really good for pixel art as well! Unchecking the antiailsing will lead to pixels, they also have their own pixel pen.
firealpaca.com/en
They also have a neat little page where they show you how to use certain functions in firealpaca!
firealpaca.com/en/topics/

You can also create custom pens as well, there's plenty of free custom firealpaca pens and it's fairly easy to create one as well. I honestly can't recommend trying it enough, I've been using it for all of my artwork for three years now without needing to switch to a different program.

Oooh, transparent animation you say? Sign me up, I've been trying to find a substitute for Photoshop for a while! I tried gimp once but alas, I cannot for the life of me understand how that thing works xD

Thank you so much for this nice review of the program haha, I'll definitely check it out!
