So, this is my little headcanon. Trixie is actually Luna's night guard in the last 1000 years before the banishment of NMM.

Luna predicted that two corrupted arcane beings will overthrown Celestia and herself. fearing for the worst, she enchants a few of her loyal night guards with a spell powerful enough to protect Equestria. She has a thought of stripping the spell off after the beings are beaten but she turned into a nightmare moon and was banished from the world.

Trixie and the others who was gifted with the spell, keeps on living for the next 1000 years, awaiting for the moon princess to return. She disguised herself as a travelling magician and performer.

Weapon of choice is a star-shaped point on a spear.
