Had to go fk it up.. my comment that is.

What i ment to say was, Excellent work. The classwall gives the photo a nice deep touch and the way that the new architecture mixes with the old one looks great.

I think this is really good and deserves a +fav.

I understand why some people are complaining about the people in it. Now, look at most of the architectural photographs. In 95% of the photos you will find ideal lines or curves, extreme symmetry, intersecting lines-diagonals (directly or through reflections), no organic components or just a very very tiny portion of it to contrast and emphasize the ideally straight lines.

Now, this is an approach to architectural photography, but it dominates the area. Also in your photo we can see this perfectness of architectural lines, combined with brownish tone (no lively colors) - this is a work of and for the mind - not emotions. It pleases the intellect like other architectural photos - don't get me wrong, it's beautiful to look at, but this (and the others) have a -let's say- classical beauty rather than a romantic one. - Can I express myself?

Ok, I am definitely NOT against existance of people in such architectural shots, and not only part of compositions where also people look ideal/stylized/symmetrical in that world of symmetry, but I like a more organic presence of them.

The problem with the people in this photo is that the photo actually belongs to the other, classical world, where people - when exist - are also classically represented. What I mean is, you said without them the photo would be too sterile, but I say the photo is kinda sterile (but not in a bad way) and these people cannot really take away that effect, they are just in a sterile world they don't belong to here. I think maybe if there were more of them, a composition of 6-7 people for example - the photo could have a very different atmosphere and that also would have been great.

But in this case, I believe they could be better off somewhere else than this photo

I hope you can understand what I'm trying (and not doing a great job there - ) to tell. Still, with the people, it is a great photo and I faved it.

thank you vm for the fav and that huge comment (the best on that pic so far )
Yes I understand what you're trying to say and I agree with you.. and - tell you what - I didn't stood there with the cam in my hands and had deep thoughts if the pic would be better or worse with the people in it - it was quite a snapshot, I waited some seconds and that was the less crowded moment I got - so, to be honest - there was no real intention to have exactly this people in the shot - it just.. happened
I wasn't aware that this pic would have such resonance and would be my most well known of all, so for me it was just one of many nice to look at shots without that huge attention for such details...

Frrmack In reply to FelixTo [2005-01-14 09:19:55 +0000 UTC]

I understand completely

You know what I think? I think you should try the same shot with a lot of people in it, I would take a lot of shots at the same location and a good composition (good compositions can also be achieved randomly, you know ) with more people could create a totally different atmosphere.

lol ok I'll try - promised!
But I don't think I'll get back to paris teh next time - so this might take five years or so - I don't think you can wait that long
