Description

One of the most famous stories from the first centuries after the Cataclysm is the quest for the Darkshine, the Holy Blade of the third Saint-Elf of the Third War of Power. Its last known bearer was Silfereth the Wise, the supreme commander of the northern allied army and a relative of the High Elf King. After the war Silfereth disappeared and several groups embarked on the quest for the lost sword, among them some of the surviving lesser demons which thought the powers of the Holy Blade could be used to become the next Great Demon Lord.

Although the chronicles of the Northern Elven Kingdom contains detailed information about his military career, before and during the war, Solfereth’s whereabouts after the Cataclysm is unknown. During several years some historians speculated that he died in one of the natural disasters that happened in those years, while others said that he was slain by followers of the Elven crown prince (it was rumored that Silfereth was the High Elf King half-brother).

Nevertheless, taking into account “The Never-ending Journey” one of the most famous quests of the Wandering Elf was the search of the Lost Sword. Alpherid realized that Silfereth was wise enough to do not try to reclaim the Elven throne, and too powerful to be killed by any of the surviving demons. Besides, the last time that the three Saint-Elves were together he told them that after the fall of the Great Demon Lords the Holy Blades lost their usefulness and he was going to find the way to dispose of his sword. It seems that Silfereth the Wise was one of the first beings in the world of Aiers who realized that the Cataclysm was the beginning of the end of the Age of Magic.

The book tells that as soon as Alpherid learned about Silfereth’s disappearance, he took the quest for the Darkshine alone. The quest of the Lost Sword, as the Darkshine is now remembered, took at least 20 years. During his journey he met several legendary treasure-hunters, and even the Necromancer was involved in the search (in fact, it is said that this was the reason of his downfall). According to the book, at least three lesser demons were searching for the sword; and one of them, for a brief time, was the bearer of the Darkshine. However it seems that the Holy Sword didn’t have the power to turn a lesser demon into a Demon Lord, since when it became the bearer of the Darkshine was when it met its doom.

-o-o-

Ok, I finally introduced the last Holy Blade: the powerful Darkshine (and its bearer Silfereth the Wise). This is part of my project of fitting an old story of mine into  's Aiers world. Since Silfereth was long gone before the beginning of this story, I wanted to keep his appearence unkown. You know, just for dramatic effect.

Anyways, enjoy him!!!

As always, I really enjoy your biographies!   It helps add a degree of mysticism and drama to the high elves and the world of Aiers in the midst of the cataclysm and post cataclysm era.

I'm not sure what happened to the "magic-sphere" as a result of the cataclysm.  The shocks of it might have done much to disrupt the web of life and made magic unpredictable during and after the cataclysm?  (assuming that's how magic works).

Magic didn't fade away altogether as much as the elves became less numerous relative to the explosion of humanity.  Millions of elves vs, billions of humans in the end of the modern era.  Why learn magic when technological weapons like firearms and mortars are so powerful and easy to use?

Indeed, advanced weaponry like fire guns is much easier to use and require much less training than, let’s say…, learning how to use the arrow and the bow. Besides magic requires special innate talents that modern scientists would say it’s a genetic predisposition to develop them.

However another reason could be that many arcane academies were destroyed during the Cataclysm years, so most knowledge was lost by this reason. On the other hand, one can say that magic is the way the ancient world perceived the human advanced scientific technology: somewhat inexplicable principles that worked anyway. Besides, in a distant future science would advance so much that the technology could bend the laws of physics.

Thank you very much for your comments, it's always a pleasure to talk with you about Aier's world (and very instructive btw)... and many thanks for the fave !

You're welcome!

Surely the loss of the demon lords hurt.  There may have been a slugfest of magicians in the third war of the power?  Zaghal the wicked city, became the greatest center of magic of the dark elves and would be destroyed in the cataclysm.  Dahl'Haran was the high elf equivalent, a city-state ruled by mages in Ushaenor.  Many of their war mages might have been killed in the war or cataclysm as well.

Indeed, the fall of those centers of magic knowledge must have dealt a blow to the magic world in general. I'd think that it could be a good reason for the desperate hunt of magical items by the surviving magic races after the Cataclysm: since most of the know-how was lost, suddenly any object that contained a bit of magic turned into a precious (and scarce) source of power!!!

Perhaps the items act as an antenna for attracting magic power from the environment?

Something like that.
