Description
A while ago I heard 'Strange Fruit' for the first time, a crackly old live recording of Billie Holiday, and I was immediately struck by its sparse, haunting beauty.Though I could hardly do justice to Holiday's recording , or the original poem by Abel Meeropol, or Lawrence Beitler's deeply disturbing photograph of a lynching which inspired the poem, I felt compelled to draw something.

Absolutely riveting. The sort of odd, uneven pacing of the panels was brilliant, keeping with the macabre feel of the strip. Even though I already knew the lyrics, the comic had me on the edge of my seat.

Yeah, that Billie Holiday song has an incredible effect on the listener. It's just paralyzing in both beauty and chilling imagery. Amazing stuff. I think you did a really fine job illustrating it.

Definitely one of Holiday's most moving songs...
I remember Scorsese once remarking that the reason why his film "Raging Bull" was made in black & white was that colour, although adding to the graphical violence, would at the same time overshadow the meaning & emotional power of the film.
Black & white for this subject, as well as your excellent choice of motives, also gives a starkness & clarity.
I'm a sucker for your more puerile drawings, but this is definitely one of your better pieces. Keep up the good work dude.
