The text reads:

Watership Down
Long ago
The yellowhammer sang, high on the thorn.
He sang near a litter that the doe brought out to play,
He sang in the wind and the kittens played below.
Their time slipped by all under the elder bloom.
But the bird flew away and now my heart is dark
And time will never play in the fields again.

Long ago
The orange beetles clung to the rye-grass stems.
The windy grass was waving. A buck and doe
Ran through the meadow. They scratched a hole in
the bank,
The did what the pleased all under the hazel
leaves.
But the beetles died in the frost and my heart is dark;
And I shall never choose a mate again.

The frost is falling, the frost falls into my body.
My nostrils, my ears are torpid under the frost.
The swift will come in the spring, crying "News!
News!
Does, dig new holes and flow with milk for your
litters."
I shall not hear. The embryos return
Into my dulled body. Across my sleep
There runs a wire fence to imprison the wind.
I shall never feel the wind blowing again.

Don't take me wrong, I am in no way depressed, as depressing as this sounds. It comes from an unhappy time in the book, but it's the only real quotable thing in the whole thing, and I wanted to do some fan art other than just the characters, which may happen anyway. I'm reading the book Watership Down by Richard Adams. I've watched the movie ever since I was little and I finally got my hands on the book. It's a very good book, I highly reccomend it. While the book is based on your regular, garden variety (pun intended) wild european field rabbits in the UK, I could find no references. So the image is based off of a belgian hare, a pet breed, which is actually a rabbit, not a hare. I looked at my dog, Pooh a dachshund, to check on the direction in which the fur typically grows, and the mustardy color scheme came off of the book cover. Ok, so here go the references, There are alot.

poem from "Watership Down" by Richard Adams (C) 1972 (this book has alot of fact about rabbit life, check it out, and the movie!)

This is really great, I love the way you drew the rabbit (I assume it's Hyzenthlay?)

It looks like the book cover!!! XD

You did an awesome job. I assume that's Hazel? He's so cute! And yours actually LOOKS like a rabbit, unlike mine. LOL. The only suggestion I have is to move the eye down just a bit. Then again, I could be wrong. And maybe you shouldn't listen to me cause I can't draw rabbits. XP

Anyway. Awesome colouring and I love the colours used, as well. You should do more WSD fanarts.

By the way...Are you a member of the club? Or do you want to be? ~ Watership-down

Lovely rabbit, and good usage of the poem. ^^ I've always loved that book...wish I could find the other half of my (very old) copy. I'd love to read this again some time...
