The composition of this piece is well done, the use of colours, primarily warm umbers to show how dried up the landscape is..also the use of tools you used to elevate the feel of the desolate harsh desert, sharp slashes of marks, this only leaves the onlooker to feel the struggle of the lone outlander, we are left to lead him through the archway where we are unsure if he will survive the hostile environment where he may encounter death from starvation, exhaustion or from the hands of rogue thugs, the only advice I can give is feel as he would feel, how long has he been travelling? how would he feel?, how would he move? seeing the footsteps, it seems like he has only travelled a mile or two, they look equally placed, orderly, unfazed.. maybe you could make them look laboured, dragging movements, this would give the character more credibility, but well done!.

Here's what I have investigated into a LOT regarding harsh climate survival and human functions: they are like oil and water - hey don't mix well, or a all.

Though I do agree the steps are not accurate; However, realistically speaking, in harsh climates (like in this composition) the steps are more labor-worn due to fatigue and other further factors - one mile alone would make the figure's electrolytes depleted enough that his/her vital functions (on a nervous-system level) would be erratically hindered, the individual would be delirious.

Two miles would lead to dangerously furthered electrolyte depletion: Thus, scientifically speaking, that would lend the body and mind to becoming luminal, cognitive function would cease, the eventuality of neural signals to the heart, lungs, vascular system, and other primary functions would also cease, let alone the figure's ability to coordinate their steps will be greatly hampered.

By the end of two miles (more or less, depending on the hardiness of the figure in this composition) one in this climate will be dead, worn, and withered.

Fictionally speaking, this character could be unearthly in some factors. However, that would not read clearly to the viewer, so realism must play into this equation more; other than that, the critique covers the bases quite well.
