Picture taken at a Kyushu style resturant in Gifu Japan.

The resturant had little compartments seperated with walls at about shoulder height, where the random lanterns are placed on top of the walls. The layout of the resturant was also interestingly leveled (there were stairs within the walk way, so the compartments near the back of the resturant were higher up, hence with higher walls), thus resulting the lanterns at all different heights.
