After mkfontdir, mkfontscale, and fc-cache, font hinting should be set to native and the path must be added in xorg.conf. Then restart X. That should do it. Besides you can check if the fonts show up in xfontsel.

For Ubuntu 9.04 I had to remove a file, as 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config' did nothing useful... >_>

the font im using is called fixed in conky it is terminus.
It is a pcf font and as far as i know is it included in the arch linux font packages. Maybe you have a look here :

When i was using ubuntu i had also probs installing artwiz. i think that one [link] helped me.
Maybe it will give you some more informations.

artwiz fonts are ace. but i won't use them for terminal apps. Especially, when you have to stare at the terminal for longer hours. If I wanted to have tiny fonts, I would go with profont, montecarlo, or proggy family of fonts. They are much better for coding. Try either of them out, and you will see a remarkable difference.
