Firstly, I don't know anything about this technique but I think you've pulled this out really nice. The purple hues of the formation work very well with the background shot and though the formation and the background are very different they still go together.
The formation, I like it. It's interesting to investigate it and wreck my mind with the question what it is. First I thought about flowers, maybe partly because the title brought the movie "Broken flowers" to my mind. And then about feathers or more likely a whole bird. How it has crashed, been shot or just simply crashed. And it fell down. There's certain sad beauty in that.
This is nice, keep up the good work!

And I'm agree with brandonc1 : I believe you could make it even better if you use the same light direction for your 3D's shadow as seen on the texture (progressive and from top-left).
