Very nice colors! Although I can't seem to find the light source, it seems to come from difference places but the wolves are only casting one shadow.

Thank you so much! I've actually always thought something was odd about this picture but I couldn't figure out what it was. But thanks for noticing it, Now I know what's wrong with it XD Iki, Hati, Jera and Raigho's shadows are correct, but the rest is were it get's confusing. Guess I was too tired while making this that I didn't notice at all. ^^'

I don't think it loos off. Simply put, the light source is all around them. The red/yellow background is like fire. So maybe the light is coming from all angles, because they're surrounded by it?

Really quite well done, this should have been at the top of their news feature, not the last one mentioned.
One small tidbit, though, regarding Fehu; wolves never, ever have curly tails, that's a mutation that arose in domestic dogs.
Then again, so are blue eyes, but I think we can make an exception here, regarding the storyline. :>

Wolves don't have curly tails, no, but they can hold them in a curled position when held up.
They never stay that way, but seeing as the characters in the picture are in moving poses it's not ridiculous to assume his tail is just held that way as he moves it.

I'd love to see some photos that are a bit clearer than those, both look pretty blurred so I can't tell if that's motion or if those are even pure wolves, from such a quality and distance. Also, I think I have you on my MSN for some reason?

I couldn't find any better ones, unfortunately.
Assuming from the poses that they're in motion though, or at the very least playful or excited.

I also think it's awesome, but one thing: In my opinion, Fehu's tail is not curly, it's just moving, like Jera's, Hati's or Isa's.

Having spent a great deal of time around wolves, wolfdog hybrids and 'wolfish' breeds of dogs, I can definitely tell the difference between a curved wolf tail and one that looks genuinely curly, and Fehu's definitely appears to be the latter. The spine would not be able to make such a sharp, C-shaped motions. Cropping it off would have made it look much more accurate, but as it is, he's got a bit of an unnaturally long husky tail going on.

I respect your opinion, all im trying to say is, My purebreed german shepherd also does that when she's moving her tail and it's not curved, yeah, fehu's tail looks a bit like a husky's, but then my gsd would be an husky too xD

"Purebred", and even who are kennel club registered does by no means guarantee or even suggest that an animal is 'breed standard'.
I'd love to see a photo of your shepherd with a tail in this position -- but even then, a shepherd is indeed a dog, not a wolf (though they did indeed begin as a wolfdog around a hundred years ago) and is inevitably going to be a very poor example of a wolf, if you expect it to replicate one (because they're not the same, obviously?), especially after a century of selective breeding and excessive inbreeding to dramatically alter their appearance.
Try doing an internet search on "first german shepherd" and see if that looks anything like your dog, or even the dog you envision today when you hear that term. Even those looked nothing like a pure wolf, but you might be surprised at how drastically different they used to be.

Dude...seriously, calm your jets. This is a piece of artwork, and considering you clearly spend time with wolves, I'm guessing you're not on an art course. So let me tell you one of the first lessons you go through;
'You don't need to be skilled to be an artist.'
So what if the tails off? Its how the artist saw it in their mind and how they wanted to draw it.
Right now, you're just spamming this lovely picture with pig headed comments.

xDember In reply to SasukeTeme [2012-09-15 04:38:48 +0000 UTC]
This artist IS skilled, and I pointed out one small flaw that could easily be improved on.
I don't see the artist complaining, and any reasonable artist knows to at least consider critiques.
No, I'm not on an "art course", nor do I believe that I or anyone else needs a special title to make them a talented artist. I got where I am on my own; I've never even go to art classes, nor do I feel that I have any reason to do so. My techniques are all self-taught.
I also don't plan to make a career out of my artwork, because I have severe nerve and joint damage in my drawing hand and it is just short of unbearable agony to even use a pencil or tablet pen anymore.
That being said, why shouldn't I share my advice and suggestions with someone who can actually put them to good use? Would you deny me that right? What gives you the justification to do so?
The time I've spent with wolves is mainly volunteering at Apple Hill's Never Cry Wolf Rescue center, and I know a few high-content wolfdogs, as well as a pure blooded wolf who is kept as a domestic pet by a man who acquired a permit to own him. I have a low-content F2 hybrid myself, also.
I do have a pretty good grasp on their general anatomy.
There is no harm whatsoever in advice; worst case scenario, you just disregard it, but getting upset or offended by it is just silly.
As for this nimrod who had to go and have a shit-fit because she thinks her german shepherd is the spitting image of a gray wolf, don't blame her imbecility on me, and don't expect me not to retaliate when someone feels the need to tell me I'm incorrect, when I know that I am not.
If the artist really doesn't want the comments there, all she needs to do is click the 'hide comment' button. It's not exactly rocket science.
Also, aren't you a bit of a hypocrite, when you're doing nothing but contributing to them? Just food for thought.

Ok man, just don't try to make me look like a fool, i know as much as you do, and honestly, that tail can look curled or not, to me it's moving, to you it's not. Done. You don't need to throw your knowlege at me. ( sorry i'm portuguese, bad spelling XD)And yeah, i know how they looked like.
And i know the diferences, but they still ( the gsd and the wolf) have some, how do you say it... the contraire of diferences -.-.
Now please, let's not keep this going on 'cuz i'm tired xD

"Throw my knowledge at you"? Who was the one who had to oppress someone else's critique by saying that, 'if that tail was curly, then my *purebred* german shepherd is totally a husky'?
That hardly even makes sense -- I did say that the mutation for a curled tail arose in dogs. Do you think your precious pedigreed shepherd is some kind of glorified wolf?
No, the GSD isn't supposed to have a curly tail either, but I've seen the shepherd in your gallery. She's beautiful, there's no denying that; but that dog is about as "show quality" as any you'd hope to find from a backyard breeder, so it honestly wouldn't surprise me if she DID have unusual traits like that.
Again, being allegedly "purebred" far from means that a dog is a prime example of its breed; and when next to all "breed standards" these days are just to make a dog look a certain way with no thought to the health or even temperament of the animal, who would even want it to be?
I would go for a mixed breed or a mutt at a shelter any day, myself. Generally healthier, often more intelligent, and usually with a better disposition, because you've begun to cancel out some of the thousands of years of inbreeding that purebred dogs have been subjected to.
You really think the shepherd and the wolf are that similar, at all? You really should check out a certain meme I have submitted in my own gallery; it focuses on determining different species of canines apart, including wolves and shepherds.
Don't blame others for making you look like a fool, you do a fine job yourself.
With all due respect; if you don't want someone to discuss something or back up their views, don't go picking a debate and then wussing out.

With purebreed, i meant only that Kuma's a gsd i didn't mean she was a wolf of any kind. I was tryign to say that i've seen both dogs -wich arn't suppose to have curly tails- and wolves with curled tails, i dunno if they have some kind of problem, but i've seen them. And Kuma is not from some fancy kennel, she and her siblings just happened.
The owner coudln't sell the dogs, so they would eyther be all adopted or killed, so i helped. And no, i don't make myself look like a fool. I might not be as good as you with writing what i really mean because i am not english/american. And i didn't expect you to make a huge scene out of it, most ppl just make a quick comment, and you didn't. And i don't know what wussing out is but ok
So i'm sorry if i said something mean to you, i didn't mean to harm/hurt anybody

Wait a minute!
Are you saying the canine in the back of the drawing ISN'T a husky!!
Holy crap! My mind's just been blown. This is about as earth shattering as the fact that the black coloration in wolves didn't appear until a cross breeding of the domesticated dog which resulted in the recessive occurrence of the color...
LOL
Genetics and evolutionary occurrence aside, great job. The artwork's beautiful and your detail to movement is good. Keep up the great work.

If you have seen "wolves" with curly tails, I guarantee you, those were NOT wolves. I'm not surprised that you can't tell the difference; many can't, and some wolfish dogs, or wolfdogs, can look a great deal like a pure wolf even if you have a practiced eye like myself. It's not a "problem" with the animal, so much as with the owner, who misrepresents them as a pure wolf, or even artists who portray them very badly. If you can fetch me any photos of a so-called "pure wolf" who has a curled tail, I will happily give you my fullest opinion on the subject in question and let you know what it is.
Chances are, it's just a dog with an ignorant owner, incapable of telling the difference between a wolf and any canine with erect ears, a somewhat bushy tail, a medium to long muzzle, medium to long fur, and medium to long legs -- any generic "husky", spitz or shepherd-looking dog, in short.
It's unfortunate about your shepherd, to come from some ignorant person who didn't even bother to get their dogs fixed, ready to dump them at a shelter or euthanize them.
No good breeder would produce pups without a plethora of quality, screened owners interested in adopting them. That's horrible. I hope you treat her well and take good care of her.
Apology accepted, but please try not to pick an argument with someone for making a critique or offering advice. I personally have a good deal of experience with these animals, namely wolves and very high content wolfdogs; I've studied them for over ten full years, so I definitely feel that I know what I am talking about when it comes to their anatomy.

It's Dember, the "x" is just slapped on there because some inactive person nabbed the name "Dember" and now that account is rotting.
I actually began studying and researching wolves and wolfdogs because I always wanted to have one, but I'd heard how stupid it is to get one just because they're pretty, or unique.
After learning more about them, I decided to go with a low-content pup and start from there, as I already prior experience with a few husky mixes.
I'd definitely love to adopt a higher content in the future, perhaps mid or even mid-high (50 - 75% or so).
My boy is only 37.5% (75% mother, pure siberian father) and shows even less than that, content-wise. Here's his mother, if you would like to see:

Actually, the sketch you're referring to are my own two dogs, including the boy I just mentioned, but the puppy is all grown up now: [link]

I have had a wolf from a breeder who's content was up around the 90's. lovely wolfdog, that one. he was gorgeous, but his husky genes still showed though. his tail was curled and his markings were a bit odd for a wolf; so one could tell that he was not a purebred.

Do you have any photos? Any hybrid who is genuinely 90% or higher is almost indistinguishable from a pure wolf, so it honestly sounds like you were one more person among the millions, who have been misled into believing that your "wolfdog" was much more wolf than it really was. It's not really related to this artwork though, so feel free to comment it on my profile or PM me, please.
