Description Okay, so I've had a good look around, and I'm pretty positive that this is a 'Crane Fly'. If you think otherwise, feel free to say so in a comment.

This was a real test for me using my new Sigma lens, and I tried to get as best composition, lighting, and detail in this tiny insect in the vast 'rapeseed field ' as possible.

for that Scene! The light is simply amazing warm ans strong! Everything really seems to glow!
Sharpness fits, too! (However, you sharpened the background, too ) What looks pretty strange to me is the end of the leave.. Looks a bit like clipped away and darkened after that? Can't really tell?!

Thank you Martin, I was surprised at the amount of light I got here. As this was in the low level of the huge field, not above for the sun to get to.
As I mentioned to someone else, the end of the leaf was in a shadow, hence the darkness. I couldn't really do anything about that, thanks for the comment.

Yeah, wouldn't expect that! Thought about a position in the bright sun!
Hmm, ok, so it was the shadow that created this crazy effect!
You'r welcome!!

Yeah, I tried before looking at the original RAW file, and it's very dark and much the same there. Plus, with the adjustments made, to bring out the fly more, it's affected this area as well... and if I were to make it like the original, against this, I don't think it would look any more right.

the sharpness is incredible, but what is that grey part underneath the green leaf(?)?

FlippinPhil In reply to ChuckNorrris [2009-05-23 21:18:19 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, and I'm not sure what part you mean..? The bottom part of the leaf at the bottom left?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChuckNorrris In reply to FlippinPhil [2009-05-23 21:19:39 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that part. It seems to have suffered under some kind of post-processing

FlippinPhil In reply to ChuckNorrris [2009-05-23 21:37:13 +0000 UTC]

I've re-looked at the image, it's just a dark shadow on the plant leaf. No post processing done really.

hmm, weird that it's so light then...

FlippinPhil In reply to ChuckNorrris [2009-05-24 18:17:18 +0000 UTC]

Remember, this was taken looking down the way. This leaf, and the fly itself was in a slight shade. Check the other photographs for an insight into how vast the field was. So, taking a shot of this where it was, some shadows would be present.

Nice detail and depth of field Phil

I've had a good look around, and I'm about 90% sure that this is a 'Crane Fly'. It's either a crane fly, or a daddy long legs anyway...

It looks like a mayfly.. here a daddy longlegs is a spider Lovely sharp shot

FlippinPhil In reply to davincipoppalag [2009-05-23 12:37:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know its a spider, but they have wings, like this one here. I was actually stuck between a mayfly, and a daddy long legs, but I think you may be right Dave.
Thanks!

Meowgli [2009-05-23 08:46:51 +0000 UTC]

this is a good one, razor sharp and well focused
something occurred to me while looking at it... it's very nice and all but seems to me thre's a better crop/rotation in there somewhere. I might be inclined to flip it upside down and play around with the crop... then the leaf would form a vague letter "J" and might make the compo even more interesting... just a thought tho!
