Dear Sydney, IT WORKED, your advice actually worked. But I should probably explain. So I didn’t really believe that whole thing about “People changing under consistent positive influence.” you said. Mainly because it sounds alot like a cat poster or something your boss would say to cover up the bad work conditions. Still I decided to try it on this quiet guy in my class named Calvin. He was okay, but it was kinda obvious to everyone in class he was deeply depressed. And for a reason I don’t remember, none of us ever did anything about it. So I started talking to him. Just simple stuff, complimenting his lunch choice, the odd fantasy novels he was always reading, stuff like that. Turns out he’s really fun to be around, so I continued to encourage him. I said a lot of corny stuff, but it did seem to make him feel better.

Then he started to change. A lil at first, his hair seemed to get a little longer and his voice sounded higher? But I assumed this was like, late stage puberty. We even hung out after school, got some drinks from the servo and we walked to his place. I can distinctly remember the phrase he said to me right before he went into his house. “I’m not a little girl, so you don’t have to walk me right up to the door.” Don’t know why but it stuck with me. I decided to up the positive influence, like exposing him to more care. It was little things, buying him a drink, doing favours, all that good stuff. And he returned it in kind. He’d constantly help me get through the hellish school days, and once even chose to mess up so we could hang out in detention together. Real bros for life stuff.

But he kept changing. His hair turned purple? Like across the days it got more and more purple, till only his tips were a natural blond and the rest was this pinkish purple mix. His hair also grew out insanely fast, to the point where he was tying it up. He tried braids, buns, heck even liberty spikes before settling on twintails for some reason. His clothing choice changed, he came out of his shell the more we hung out. I can remember one time we were at my place and he took off his jacket and I swear I could see boobs shapes. And this all happened within about 2 weeks mind you, so I was certain others were noticing. But when I asked around, nope. Either I was being gas lit, or everyone in town genuinely didn’t notice the changes. And they even started referring to him as a “her”, which I’ll be doing from now on.

And I could kinda see it at first. Like sure if she stopped with the bright pink tracksuit and the face masks sure. But she began to dress differently. Shorts, singlets and what I think was an oversized crop top that really just looked like a normal top. I remember in between our conversations she started chatting with the girls and was like, acting like a total girly girl with them. At this point I thought I was going mad. So I looked back through our photos and found earlier ones. And she looked different, sorta. In those she looked like she’d always been a girl, just much less out going and with really crappy hair. Maybe she’d always been a girl and I’d just missed it? I dunno.

But then came the big moment. So we were having a sleep over her place and watching a crappy old action movie which I can’t remember the name of. And she’d left the room too, I dunno do her make up and she came back and asked me an odd question which sits in my brain clearly. “Hey, do you think we’d be like the couple in the film?” “How so?” “As in do you think we only care for eachother cause we are going through the end of highschool? That this is a relationship only built on codependence through a tough time?” “That’s oddly existential of you” “I have my moments” “But no, I think this relationship started as me just supporting you through tough time. But it’s grown, we’re friends who hang out almost constantly. So no, I don’t think that once highschool ends we’ll forget about each other, is what I think you're asking.” This seemed to please her and she gave me a kiss on the cheek?

AND APPARENTLY THIS WAS IN FACT HER ASKING ME OUT! It took me a while to realise till I heard her say it. So like yeah, we’re a couple now. We haven't really changed how we act, it just means we hold hands when we hang out and she occasionally kisses my cheek. I also got confirmation, her new name is Chloe! We're gonna move in together after grad, since we both got into the same uni. But yeah your advice worked so well it got me a gf! I dunno how exactly but to prove it here’s the before and after photos.
