Like his friend Abrahim Wolf, Patrick Ilyuskov also hails from planet Amaterasu. However, where Wolf was from a mining village on the outskirts of habitable civilization, Ilyuskov hails from the planet's most populous city of New Johannesburg, a predominantly South African and British enclave straddling an archipelago that quickly eclipsed the predominantly Japanese settlements of the planet.

Ilyuskov grew up mostly middle-class, his family owning a moderately successful import and export business. However, his family business turned to smuggling upon the IMC's military takeover of the planet, and was later subjected to a hostile takeover upon IMC discovery. Ilyuskov's more-or-less comfortable life of cooldown canal work collapsed overnight, and he was forced to drop out of New Johannesburg's art college to become a family breadwinner.

When news of a miner's uprising spread across Amaterasu, Ilyuskov had planned to lay low. Until he saw, with his very own eyes, the IMC firing live rounds into demonstrators. He couldn't bear to see it, and took up arms to fire into IMC security. He later participated in a homegrown attack to steal an IMC carrier ship loaded with Titans, bombers, dropships, and cargo ships that would later be repurposed into titan dropships.

He later met Abrahim Wolf in boot camp while Amaterasu was organizing its first Frontier Militia regiment. They soon settled into a pattern. Where Wolf would run cloaked sneak attacks on IMC targets, opening up with an automatic weapon or shotgun revolver, Ilyuskov would hang back and serve as marksman, grappling his way across the battlefield.

This dynamic is visible even as the two of them pilot their Titans - where Wolf forges ahead in his Legion, Ilyuskov hangs back with a Tone and softens up targets with rocket barrages.
