this is absolutely shocking.

i bow to you.i seriously have never found another artist our age as good as you in my life

how do you draw your hair?i always have problems with it?and how do you recommend drawing darker areas?

BarefootedBaroness In reply to BarefootedBaroness [2007-06-27 02:56:49 +0000 UTC]

oooh thank you!

i always hear about "layering" the lead and people compare it to painting and it just screws me all up but that really helped

FlyingSaucerTeacup In reply to BarefootedBaroness [2007-06-27 01:46:37 +0000 UTC]

Haha wow, thank you so much. That is extremely flattering!!!

I usually do the hair in sections, typically I use a super light pencil and mark out where the darker areas are. After that, I pretty much do it randomly, I really have no method... (you can tell on this WIP [link] ) Honestly, I have no idea how it turns out like it does... If somehow I figure it out, I'll let you know, haha.

And darker areas you can do a number of different ways. It's best to wait to do those last 'cause they smudge easier (although I never do because I have close to no patience...) but I either use a 6B and then go the other way over top with an HB or 2B, or you can find a 9B pencil, which are REALLY soft, and sorta hard to work with, especially in small areas. But they're super dark, and pretty sweet!! For the darker areas on the face, I always make them too light (not on purpose, it's just scary to make it so dark!) and then I end up going back and just going over all of it with more layers to darken it. (there are actually places that are still too light, but that's okay) Anyway, i hope that helped!

well, you sure did change between your Id and this drawing (having looked at both pictures for 10 seconds now..)

but seriously, i really like this, i read the comment of *Simzzzz and i agree with him. i really like the fragile, kindof hurt look in the eyes, the emotion of it all, gives a real touch to it. kudos!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlyingSaucerTeacup In reply to moezja [2007-05-02 08:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Hah, yes I have changed quite a bit in a year... and not to mention my hair is not blond anymore, but blue and brown, which makes it translate to black in a photo void of color, but that's beside the point. (Plus my chin is ill-shaped in the drawing, but I'm too done with it to fix it. )

I'm very glad you like it, and thanks very much for the favourite!! (again) For school, I believe I will be doing more self portraits, because I'm the only person I know that will sit still long enough for me to draw/paint(some people let me paint ON them though)/create art from/etc... Plus I have a history of changing my hair colour quite frequently, like a chameleon, only not, 'cause unfortunately I only have boring bifocal vision and I can't articulate my eyes independently of each other , but once again that's beside the point.. (maybe I'll paint myself as a chameleon with googly eyes now, hahah, thanks for the inspiration.. )

And, as I told Simzzzz, this is probably the most serious artwork to ever be created by these (and by 'these' i mean 'my') hands, but nonetheless I still like it, for some reason... who knows!

Anyway, thanks very much for the comment, although you didn't necessarily ask for a novel in response, I suppose that's just what you get for commenting so kindly and thoroughly.

great drawing, you have manged to get a lot of emotion / drama into the piece which makes it very interesting, like the cropped compostion adds to the overall aesthetics. very competent drawing skills.

FlyingSaucerTeacup In reply to Simzzzz [2007-04-30 01:13:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! I appreciate the comment immensely. You are one of the most accurate realists i have ever seen, and I can only aspire to acheiving your level of skill.

This is the most melancholy and serious drawing I will probably ever create (especially for a self portrait), as I am typically not a very serious person, but the intensity and emotion was intentional, so I'm glad you picked up on that.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting!!

Simzzzz In reply to FlyingSaucerTeacup [2007-04-30 08:36:03 +0000 UTC]

You did extremely well for a self portrait, they are very hard to do as one tends to glorify the image to make themselves appear more pleasing and how you think people want to perceive you, and there is always that instinct to leave out certain elements. pores, blemishes, marks, etc.. this is what contributes to our identities, you are obviously working from photographs so stay true to what you see and include all these and the work will appear very realistic.

I should also comment on how your work has incorporated a great sense of the photographic properties, the slight blurring and shallow depth works well and gives the impression of a photograph. the hair especially.
Great work and I will look forward to your next artwork.

FlyingSaucerTeacup In reply to Simzzzz [2007-04-30 22:16:58 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very, very much!

I've always battled (as I'd assume any realist does at some point) with that urge to create what you think yourself and your viewers expect to see, as opposed to duplicating details as you see them exactly. I was working from a photograph, because I deemed it wise to first nail down (or at least attempt) photo-realism before I even toy with the realm of hyper-realism. Thanks for the advice, very much. Any constructively critical comments are very much appreciated (especially from extremely competent and advanced artists such as yourself), as I am always striving to improve (as I'd imagine most artists are, correct?)

And thanks, once again! I think it's interesting how perception is altered through photography, and how light and shadows and depths and blurring are different through a single lens as opposed to two eyes. (although the latter seems much more difficult to translate onto a two dimensional surface!)
Thanks, I look forward to creating it.
