Excerpt from Footy’s Journal

March 3

   Holy cow am I tired. Today was... a rough day. Y’know those days where everything seems to just go wrong, and there’s nothing you can do about it? It started out with Gin and Tonic fighting over the tiniest scrap of meat this morning. They usually don’t ever fight, but man there were fangs today. It wasn’t very long, but I think Tonic got a bit overwhelmed with Gin there as well as my new boy Kolchuck.
   He’s a sweet little thing, and well trained, but Tonic with new tokotas can be a trial. She was probably just overstressed with a few thing changing, but she definitely bit into Ginny pretty well. No blood or anything, just upset feelings. Had to separate Nic to her own little area. I usually just let the pack roam around(they stay close by) but she had to go to the barn. Poor thing.
   Anyway, that was rather stressful, and after that while I was trying to fix up the patches in the yard the big goobs had made while playing, I totally fell face first into the mud. Just head over heels. It was ridiculous.
   After cleaning myself up, I went BACK out to go fix up more again when I look over, and there’s Ginny, whining the most pitiful whine as her head is freaking stuck in a bucket. What. A. Dope. I did have to laugh a bit at that, but then she wouldn’t let me come close to get it off of her. I literally had to saddle Kol up and lasso her down like a bloody wild horse, all the while she’s bumping into stuff hurting her nose and making herself even more upset. When I finally got her tied up and had the bucket removed, I was just done. Done working. Done taking care of the freaking mutts. Just done.
   What was crazy then though was down the road, here comes Shelby and Eggnog, trotting into view. Immediately Shelby saw that I was tired and upset, and she jumped off of the yellow pooch and calmed me down. She helped me realize there are just days like this, and that to help out, you just need to go ride. I was a little hesitant because I was so worn out, but she was like, “Just do it you big weeny.” So I did. Saddled up Gin (because it looked like she needed a little ego boost after her bucket episode) and we went off into the mountains.
   I let Kolchuck follow behind us, but he only walked for a little bit and then turned back around. I think he was actually a little worried about Nic and wanted to go placate her. What a sweet thing.
   Anyway, the ride was just what we needed. Fresh air, Ginny able to stretch her legs, and good friends. We didn’t go fast or anything, just played around exploring and what not. Eggnog at one point found some big ol’ bear tracks and the two Toks followed those for a bit. At one point Shelby even got off and tracked the bear as well. I just sat on Gin like a little bump on a log, my eyes dropping. The easy gait of Gin is just so smooth that I think I even fell asleep riding for a minute!
   As soon as it got dark though, we trekked on home, letting the pups go at their own speed. We got back and Kolchuck and Nic were laying there cuddled and happy as can be! I could have cried at how happy I was seeing that. Shelby helped me feed everybody and then she went on home, happy as she could be. I’m super grateful for her today. What a good friend.

It’s days like this that test me, but it always feels good to conquer them. Still love it out here. Going to bed.
