STRANGE PONY
Sioux stumbles upon a lost mare.
------
The lost herd had nestled themselves into a routine in the high mountains, Carmen proving to be an excellent lead mare. Her ability to find fresh water that wasn't frozen, or warmth where the was none was astounding. Sioux was pleased with their progress, but the urge to get back home when they were stationary was... relentless. He was completely restless and found himself prone to wandering, though always keeping the herd in hearing distance. He paced circles around them continuously, his mind wandering far to his family.
And Dama.
His mindless wandering brought visions of the beautiful mare, and through his damaged mind he found that longing for her in his heart. It was stronger than the insanity, and the more he thought of her, the clearer his mind felt. With the clarity, came rememberance, and the forgotton fact that he was sure to have missed his first child's birth. He knew the babe was sure to be a filly, and his heart ached even more for the thought of her as well. What was he missing? Was Dama alright? Was the babe alright? And so he hiked, cursing the winter. Cursing the upright creatures that took him from them. Cursing Carmen for reminding him so much of Dama. Cursing the other mares because they wouldn't continue onward.
Cursing the mountains that stood between Dama and himself- wait.
D-dama?
Sioux stopped abruptly next to the steadily flowing river as the crunching of the rocks underneath hooves came from a momentarily glimpsed grullo head. Sioux's heart thudded deeply in his chest as he bolted without caution toward the mare. "W-wait!" He cried out, watching the dark body begin to disappear through the trees. The mare stopped at his call, and Sioux rushed in his heart exploding with happiness as he rounded a tree.
"Dama!" He laughed, pushing forward to nuzzle her sweet delicate nose- when a snort of anger stopped him in his tracks. He gazed at the mare, surprised, before the fog of his memories blew away to reveal a lovely grullo mare... with appaloosa markings covering her body. His soul plummeted like a pheasant in september as he realized his mistake.
"Back of chump!" The mare snapped at him, her dark ears pinned in scared anger. "I'm warning you!" Sioux sighed heavily, lowering his head in sadness as he groaned.
"Why... why aren't you her?" He whispered, defeat dripping on every sylable. The mare cocked her head in confusion, her intuition sensing more than just a herd hungry stallion.
"... who?" She replied, curious now as to what he was talking about. He raised his blue gaze to her, drinking in her face that was so similar to Dama's. His stare was longer than was comfortable, and the mare moved in unease. "Are... are you okay?" She asked, crumbling under his gaze.
"Please... please walk with me..." He whispered once more, straightening up and looking at her in earnest. "You remind me so much of her... please stay with me a while..."
"Well... maybe for a minute..."
