Description
My self-appointed spin on Inktober-type challenges for 2020 was “Monstober” wherein I fill out different prompts of a resurrected monster meme I made. This challenge/meme/devotion was very simple the actual month of October as my only requirement for month long challenges is to begin a picture on the day of that prompt, not necessarily finish one...but then I got to coloring and a new challenge reared its head, for I combined coloring the sketches with my 31 October color palette prompts you can see here and had to choose the right coloring for each drawing. Yeeey for making things harder on yourself.
Oct 20) Human Monster
Much as Red would beg to differ, the tethered in Us ARE as human and as monstrous as anyone living above ground. For all my binging on true crime docs I kind of don’t have the stomach for slasher flicks unless it’s the olden-type mustache twirling murderer weirdo or someone more 'complex', y’know?
#20 “Lady of the Underground” is based upon the costume+staging of Amber Gray as Persephone in Hadestown. Given the character I chose to draw for this prompt, it’s MORE than appropriate!
Oct 21) Monsters in Love
Cause you can’t have October without Frankenberry and Chocula. Is it weird that they were the first monster couple in my roster that came to mind?
#17 “Pastel October” comes from a lovely Halloween greeting card that I unfortunately can’t find anywhere when trying to look for it. It’s colors were so uniquely October AND also Valentines-esque. I loved it!
Oct 22) Monster at Home
Halloween monsters to be more precise. I can assure you that Star and Tim didn’t mean to poison Jack this time, it’s simply a matter of their dad being too nice to decline his kids’ recipes over Sally’s, who knows her poisons a bit better.
#15 “Pumpkin Spice” is a no brainer whether or not you’re a tasteless white valley girl like myself around October.
Oct 23) Periodical Monsters
I really like the Americana Jiangshi’s I’ve designed here. If you know what their names mean then you know exactly what kind of cruelty they tend to inflict upon their victims when they’re out hoppin’ on that chi.
#10 “Selkie’s Song” is one of my absolute favorite color schemes - for October or ANYTHING really - as it’s based on the climatic sequence from Song of the Sea as Saorise sends the fair folk home with the passing of Halloween Night.
Oct 24) Accurate Monster
I encourage you all to drop any depictions of wendigoes as these antlered creepypasta-n00bs (also stop calling them cryptids. They’re spirits from Algonquin mythology they’re not believed in the same way that Bigfoot or Black Eyed Children are - you don’t call Banshees or Dragons cryptids, stop naming every other indegenous creature a cryptid!) and look up what actual Algonquin people say about them...because they sound so much worse than just a hangry cannibalistic ghoul.
My biggest improvisation on the wendigo designed here is the flabby stomach it’s dragging beneath it. That was a detail inspired by the life of sideshow performer Tarrare who suffered from a highly unusual stomach and metabolism.
#30 “Live Deliciously” is based on the muted, near black-and-white colors found in Roger Egger’s The VVitch, especially during the daytime shots of the forest.
Oct 25) Monster based after your biggest fear
I still hate needles. I’m not anti-vaxx or anything, I just do.
On the plus side though at least I’m less likely to be addicted to heavy drugs.
#4 “The Great Pumpkin Waltz” takes its color scheme from the Linus/Lucy scenes from It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Ironic as it’s a very cozy palette in my book.
Oct 26) Scary/Cute Monster
My headcanon dictates that Ruby’s actually a human/demon hybrid. She simply fancies herself more of a ‘cute’ monster than a creepy one. BUT- she has her limits.
#3 “Sugar Skull Chique” is based on commercialized Day of the Dead art for children and is supposed to harken the appeal of a sugar skull with its use of whites and different organic candy colors.
