Boo! Little furry friend of one of the best characters from BG! I have a huge sentiment to Minsc! He was always in my team, when I was playing BG. I like the way You draw fur!Β

Do you use blending sticks for shading? They make fur and hair a million times easier to draw.Β

Yes, but I discovered this fabulous tool quite recently. Shame on me! You're right, it is much easier to draw hair with it. Especially when you draw with colored pencils.

I had been using my fingers for the purpose of shading to begin with but you can imagine how messy that could get. Found out about the sticks by watching some random tutorial and I bought them right away. I'm pretty terrible with color pencils, largely due to the fact that I bought cheap ones just to practice with without realizing how much harder that is.Β

Oh yes, using fingers! Been there done that. But not for long, I mean my teacher from art school, which was teached me how to draw properly and only academic style - realistic I should say, was yelling at me everytime I used my fingers to blend pencil. So I stopped. And after all these years, despite I was quite frequent guest in shops with all this stuff to create art, I didn't realize that I could simply buy a blender. I personally like the one in a Β pencil from Derwent, but I heard that Derwent got another one in marker. And finaly - colored pencils - cheap does not always mean bad. Ewerything depends on how soft colored pencils You like. I'm working with Polycolor from Koh-I-Noor. They are not the cheapest I've ever seen, but very nice for begginers. And also in diferent sets, from 12 pencils to 72, You have also portrait set (this is the one I've got). Some nice colored pencils are also Giotto Stilnovo, or colored pencisl from Astra.

I've picked up a good bit of stuff from my dad since he's the actual artist in the family but rarely gets to do it now, with his job and all. Couldn't find his color pencils so I settled for what I could find without spending too much right away. I'll eventually get the proper pencils, markers and maybe a drawing pad to try out some digital work. As for pencils, I remember having Giotto and Faber Castel back when I used to draw a lot, in elementary school but they're nowhere to be found.Β

I know that Faber Castell has their own website, but I'm not sure if you can buy anything through it. Their products are also on Amazon or e-bay. When I was looking for a Prismacolor set for me, I saw a lot from FC, as well as Giotto.Β I don't know which countries they supply their products, in Poland I've got Faber Castell online shop. I think that They may be available in artists shops, stationary.

Aha! Misunderstanding Β . From my experience with painting I remember that I mixed yellow ocher with red and white, but with pencils it is more difficult, because not everyone has the property that they allow you to overlap with layers. I am not a master in drawing with colored pencils, what is in my gallery is probably everything I have drawn them from the primary school and I am a happy owner of flesh-colored shades. But if you do not have them, you can experiment with a very light pink and light brown gently put on pink, then blend with a white pencil and you should get something similar to skin color. Interesting is also color shattering, I have no idea if it sounds reasonable in English, but I mean, that every color is not pure, and it depends on light tone and the way light is lighting things (haha, light is lighting sorry maybe I should say illuming...? I don't know), anyway You can find in something yellow a green, or even pink tone, so You can use for shading skin colors like violet, blue, green. For shading I usually use gray and brown - to the darkest places on the face and if the skin is illuminated with some specific reflex of light, then I also add this color. Β You can also experiment with red and orange in creating a flesh color, from my experience, the worst solution is to rely on yellow, unless it is quite warm. I mean, when You put yellow as a base color, for shading it is ok to use some yellow. Duh... English is still so dificult to meΒ Β
