Description project for fernando ruiz's narrative art I class at the joe kubert's school. we had to do a single six panel page summary of any movie we liked.

once i get this project back it's going to get a little more love...it's actually more finished than this already - i just wasn't sure how much time i'd have to scan it before class started

Interesting paneling, though slightly confusing to someone who is not familiar with It

yeah, unfortunately the panel layout and number were part of the assignment's requirements. telling a movie's story in six panels is hard no matter what movie it is

Great drawing! As a kid, Fizgig scared me more than the Skeksis did.

lol that's awesome...for some reason this movie didn't scare me at all since there were no people in it, but labyrinth used to scare me a little bit.

What a fantastic choice followed up by a stellar execution. You really managed to capture the entire story in it's full scope and scale in a mere 6 panels. I love the attention to detail, the fluidity and naturalism in the motion and the realism of the expressions. If I hadn't seen the dark crystal yet I would definitely want to see it after seeing this.

thanks the pot in panel 1? was intending the pot and floating crystal thingy to be the light source and didn't want too much going on in there

Green-Ruby In reply to freddylupus [2011-02-18 22:47:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, I meant the collective melting pot as far as comic artists today. Kind of a lame similey.

Very nice, it really sums up the entire plot of the movie quite well!

freddylupus In reply to JANunnoArt [2011-02-17 01:49:13 +0000 UTC]

thanks! yeah, i debated with myself about panel four a lot...wasn't sure if i should do this boat scene - where their friendship develops - or the scene where jen falls into the swamp water and kira helps him out - when they actually first meet. ended up going with this one since it was easier to make it interesting without using ANOTHER closeup.

no matter what i chose it was going to be IMPOSSIBLE to get everything...which i guess was the point of the assignment...forcing us to see what the very most important part of a story is.

how'd your move go?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JANunnoArt In reply to freddylupus [2011-02-20 05:14:25 +0000 UTC]

I think you made a good choice on the panel, that way it wasn't too much action, so it showed the most important action scene of the movie at the end, and the scene in the boat makes it seem more like a journey, which is what that story really was like.
I actually haven't moved yet. I leave on wednesday, and will get to my destination on thursday. It's been a big stress trying to get everything together so really working on any art work as been hard. I think I'm going to have to wait until after I move before I work on any serious pieces. Thank you very much for asking!

VASS-comics [2011-02-16 21:04:50 +0000 UTC]

The first 4 panels look pretty sweet, but the last 2 need backgrounds. The only other thing is breaking panel borders pull they don't push, breaking the border draws your eye into the panel that is having stuff break out so in panel 3 you use it incorrectly, but in panel 6 it works better. Also when you break your border really break it like you did on the 3rd panel, but dont kinda break the border just because you couldnt fit the chicks head in there like in panel 6. I would add some backgrounds, tweak a few things in photoshop like shrink jan in the 3rd panel so he fits, then shrink both of them in the last panel so they fit and Boom! portfolio piece. Working with a 6 panel grid sort of sucks, but I am doing samples for marvel and they specifically tell you to do grid style layouts and not break panel borders, so I guess just keep that in mind as you power up so you will be ready when the time comes with sweet grid layouts and no broken borders
Keep bringing your stuff is powering up, especially your textures and storytelling.

freddylupus In reply to VASS-comics [2011-02-16 21:37:04 +0000 UTC]

thanks, man!

...yeah, panel 5 DEFINATELY needs more of a background...i put some of their rune-ish symbols on the floor, but i need to cram some of the chamber walls in there. fernando suggested zap lines in panel 6, which would be easy and convey the whole glow aspect i want it to have...but i'll prolly put some super fine crystal castle stuff in there

i like that easy fix idea for the panel breaks...but rather than shrinking the gelflings in panel six, do you think it'd work if i slid them to the right a lil? i don't know if shrinking them would make them too close in size to the figures in panels 3 and 5.

VASS-comics In reply to freddylupus [2011-02-16 22:11:29 +0000 UTC]

if you can do it and still have a little space between them and the panel border then go for it, if not, then shrink them a little so they fit with no tangents. zap lines are always good and Fernando is a master while I am a novice, so if he tells you something it is probably correct
