The human symbiosis

Because of the effects of global warming, the increase of population, the global resources diminished.
In order to provide the food for the entire population, the governments, all across the word, started to build huge cities where most of the people lived. Only a small part of the population, who was necessary for the agriculture, lived in the rural area, where they work at big farms, that covered most of the land. Because of the excessive pollution, the oceanic fish has a considerable concentration of mercury and it isn’t considered comestible, only a limited quantity of fresh water fish is available in the most expensive restaurants on Earth.
Because of the limited resources the humankind is trying to find new sources of alternative energy but they still didn’t manage to completely stop from using fossile fuels.
It was a normal day in a overpopulated metropolis, most of the people were busy to go to work or come from work. All of a sudden, the big screen, that normally showed ads, started to air an important message by the government, the fact that all the citizens over the age of 16 and under the age of 65 must present themselves to the army recruitment centers. It was quite an unusual message, but most of the people worried more about food supply shortages than a force recruiting in the military. It only passed a month since the force recruiting, when the government announced that most of the counties in the word are at war.
For fear of complete mutual annihilation, no government wishes to use nuclear weapons. Even if a number of people could survive a nuclear attack, the planet will be completely destroyed and no crops could be planted or animals raised because of the nuclear winter and the high level of radiations.
The war didn’t started for a long time, when a surprise chemical attack happened in a city. Most of the buildings were isolated from outside and the air was purified before it entered the buildings, so only the people that were outside got affected by the chemical weapon. This chemical agent affected the somatic nervous system, the people affected by it remaining paralyzed from neck below. The entire population is in shock. Everyone wonders what is going to happen next. The government is giving the order to send the troops urgently in the country that is responsible for this attack. The state of panic gets worst each day, the city is basically paralyzed. Most of the services from which thein the city are not functioning, because the people can’t go to their jobs. After the chemical agent is no longer present in the air, the government decides to quickly train the remaining citizens in the main fields that are necessary to maintain the services and the local industry. After only a week after the firs incident, another chemical attack happens in the same city. This time, is about a different chemical agent, that affects the occipital lobe, making the people affected by it completely blind. People are in a complete state of panic. In order to deal with the big number of patients, the government is starting to open improvised hospitals, in different buildings that now are no longer used for their original purpose, like theaters, cinemas, malls, etc. The scientist are trying to find a possible cure for the ones affected by the two chemical attacks, but, after a careful study of the patients, they realize that the effects produced by the chemical agents are irreversible.
In order to provide enough food for the residents of the city and for the military, the government decides to build a new factory in city to produce canned meat. The entire production line of the factory is automated, the only people that work at the factory are the technicians and the drivers that transport the goods. The war doesn’t seem to take any turn. The people from the city are starting to hear a rumor, the fact that some patients from the hospitals across the city are starting to disappear. It doesn’t take long for the citizens to wander about the sours of all the meat in the factory, considering the fact that, before the war, there was already a shortage of meat in the supermarkets. Then the inevitable happens, the people hear rumor that the meat from the cans made in the factory comes from the missing patients in the hospitals across the city. People start to revolt, many start a hunger strike and refuse to go to work until the factory stops the production. The news arrive at the patients in the hospitals, they start to panic, not knowing who is going to be the next one to be sent to the abattoir. Soon, some of the patients decide that they have to try to do something about their situation. The patients that are blind start to form pairs with the ones that are paralyzed, in order to help each other. The blind patients can carry the paralyzed ones and those that can see can guide them. The population, together with the patients, go in the streets to protest. In order to get the population under control, the government start to hire thousands of mercenaries to stop the riots. Because most of the citizens of the country are gone to fight in the war, most of the population left behind composes of children, teenagers under the age of 16 and old people, because of this, the riots are stopped in just under a day. Many people steel refuse to eat cans that contain human meat, the only problem is that ther is not enough actual food on the market for everyone, considering the fact that most of the food is sent to support the troops.
The war doesn’t seem to stop. Facet with the idea that they have to eat human meat that could even belong to a family member or a friend, many decide to look themselves in the house and starve to death. The one that continue to survive don’t have any other choice that to get used with the idea that they will have to eat human meat in order to survive.
After years of conflict, the society is divided in the ones that can afford the luxury to eat something else that human meat and the ones that don’t have any other choice. Only a small part of the ones affected by the chemical attacks are still alive, hiding in the metro tunnels and the sewers, forming small communities that hunt rats or even try to cultivate some plants, in any case, refusing to eat one of their own. Like a defiance brought to war and the attacks that affected them, this small communities are the only ones that kept their humanity.
