Given that Eric is a spellcaster, I figured that he had some sort of magical cruise control rigged for the ship--the ship would maintain a set heading (winds permitting), but there's no sort of obstacle detection involved, thus hitting the rock.

You'd think so, but apparently he has no crew at all besides himself, Evals, Mike, and Kathrin. You are right in saying that such a situation leaves them woefully understaffed--assuming that the sails are adjusted manually rather than magically, a ship needs to have available at all times at least a helmsman plus the minimum number of people for trimming the sails (e.g. two if the sails require two people pulling at once on a sail). It is this severe lack of crew that leads me to conclude that Eric must use magic to trim the sails and to maintain the ship's heading. The only other alternative that I can think of is that he has drafted his passengers into performing these tasks, but we have yet to see any of them doing ship's work beyond cleaning and cooking.

Well, one of the brothers anyway. LOL. I knew it had to be popular because every time that Tom streams, well over 100 people visit to watch. In fact, I always look forward to his streams and I'm in there for a while. (I usually have to leave relatively early so I can get some sleep before work. LOL.)
