Description The title was something I kept telling myself the other day...
I drew this when I was feeling like expressing my feelings, when the internet was out, and when I was in a lot of pain physically and emotionally. It turned out almost just as how I wanted to which is usually rare for me, so I'm really happy with the results! Usually when I'm feeling down, I draw happy pictures to cheer me up... and looking at this picture really brings me happiness so i guess it worked C:
I was inspired to try a lot of new stuff, and I finally decided to use my Photoshop again after what... 4 months? XD
But I don't regret it at all... I just now had to shut it down when I was almost finished with another nice picture like this. Darn. D:
I really wanted to express a feeling too... kind of love, pain, and other feelings I was thinking of when I was drawing this.
Anyway... this is my Korean OC "TY" again. He really needs a cooler name...D:
This picture is supposed to show his kindness, and kind of... uh "blankness" too? Like how his expression is usually blank but here it almost looks like a smile. :]

Btw, inspired me to use my photoshop again and I also thought of this idea after seeing her art. Her gallery is really adorable, so if you liked this please see her art too!

I'm done talking now, sorry for the long artist comment
Enjoy

EDIT: About the critique below... The person who critiqued it didn't understand that the picture's meant to have multiple emotions in it, not just one and that I meant for it to be simple and not really going "out of the box". Each part of the picture is to symbolize something, you just have to figure it out! C:

so! first things first: i think it's a cute idea, and the overall result is very cute and charming. however, the whole "cute" aspect doesn't really match up with what mood you're trying to convey. i would think that a cute design with dreary colours would show the exact opposite, optimisim if anything. sadness is tricky to convey, but even harder to effectively with a cutesy style. you do however, have the right idea with the colours.

okay, considering the more technical aspects. i think the whole holding an umbrella thing is a tad cliche, you should try expressing emotion in your artwork in ways no one's thought of before. yes, an umbrella in the picture usually implies a melancholy feeling, but it's something thats pretty universally known. try being out of the box, give a whole new meaning to the word "sad" for the people that see the picture.

the hand doesn't seem to be holding the umbrella, the way it's shown here, the umbrella would topple over quite quickly. maybe bend the arm, and make the hand grip up higher. and the other arm just looks kinda awkward to me personally, as it gives off the feeling you were trying to hide the hand. it just doesn't look like a very natural pose, is what i mean. i think in this picture, it would work much better if the left arm was just down to the side, rather than going behind him.

overall, it's nice and cute, it just needs some work on looking a bit more natural, and conveying the idea behind it more.

i apologize in advance that this critique kinda jumps around, didn't realize it til right now aha e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Sweating a little..."/>

Thanks for the critique! The only thing I wanted to point out is that sadness wasn't the only emotion I wanted to convey. (which is where the umbrella has it's symbolism too.) I was looking for an idea that would show the viewer different emotions, not just one...and also something that people could make a connection with. (like umbrella would be kindness, protection, etc) Understandable though if you thought so and wanted to catch me on that! xD Ahh and agree with what you said about hand anatomy. My hands are not so good yet; I've only just started with that stuff a few months ago... Hm, the other arm... Now that I look at it it wasn't really how I intended. His hand was supposed to be casually in his pocket, but somehow it ended up behind his back. Actually, I don't think it's either. But sure, I'll consider that. The critique itself could've had a little more pointing out of nicer aspects of the picture rather than mostly pointing out mistakes. I thought it was kind of in the middle for fair and unfair... But seeing this is your (first) critiques, I'll give you a fair rating because you did give compliment too. C: Thanks!

This is pretty solid. The combination of simplistic character design, static pose, combined with the grey-blue background color and the vertical line texture effect and the length of the piece (ie: how the composition adds to the whole thing) all go together to create a wonderful sense of...well, general depression and "down" emotions. However, it's counteracted perfectly by his surprised/interested/neutral expression, the softness and roundness of his features (which make him a friendly-looking character) and the tiny hearts. It's like he sees us and is offering the umbrella and a little bit of encouragement. My compliments on a wonderful piece!

Thank you so much for the kind critique! Very nicely said, for the first one I ever had. c: I see you have noticed the emotions I've attempted to convey, you described that nicely too in a way I can understand. (and also something good for others viewers to see written about it as well.) Many thanks again, I had no problem at all deciding on the fairness of the critique! ;D

Aww, I love the composition - the simplicity of the design, the use of negative space, the restricted but vibrant color palette, and the conservative use of textures. I think this piece really says what it needs to say because it brings me happiness too.

Yeah, I don't know... I want to change it to something, but I want the letters of his name to be T and Y. Or maybe J and Y? :/ If it's not to much of a bother, could you suggest some? Maybe I'll find one I like...
