Description Old soldiers are dear to my heart, as I spent my time in the army and made and lost friends there. The Afghanistans, historically, have been fierce fighters and are to this day. This picture isn't political, but only honours the soldier. I left the face partially unfinished to represent the cultural divide in understanding between the Middleeast and the West. Hopefully someday we'll be able to fill that gap in a possitive way.

This has everything about your direct art that I love and admire. In many ways, I like this one better than "Reflections." It's really a strong piece of work, I think--you have a feel for the direct touch, and the unfinished status of it really is a strength, too. You are, in many ways, such an inspiration to me. This is a beautiful example.

You know, once my wife saw me use the indirect approach, she obsessed and tries to get me to always use it. But nephew, I will be true and strong and continue to use the direct when the piece merits such.

I think the direct approach shows so much more insight into the artist's thoughts and strategy and method, but it takes someone with some artistic awareness to want and see that insight. That's not to rip on your dear wife, of course, but it is to say that when people come looking for something specific in art, they probably will not see what's already there. My experience is that loved ones often have expectations, wants, and "looking for something" from the artists in their family, and hence miss out on the good stuff that is in any particular piece because they can't/don't see and find what they think they're after...

I prefer the direct approach. It just feel more artistic, if that makes any sense, to me. Thank you for the comments. You're helping me analyze my work more.

The indirect approach seems more bound by constraints, such as... oh, I don't know,... maybe time or a need to make the textures look 'correct' right from the outgo. Just like Picasso pushed away from it, I think the direct approach you take seems to be freeing yourself from constraints, even though your work certainly comes off looking more realistically textured than Picasso's...

Kind of what I'm trying to do is intermingle them when I can. Sometimes the drawing demands either or, or both. I just fly by the seat of my pants on when. I tend to have more fun when I'm using the direct, maybe it's because of my love of line.

Ya! This here Freya50's my honest-to-God long-lost uncle! I've been admiring his art for 30+ years, and he's been inspiring mine for at least that long. He's about the only member of my family who'll look at my stuff with an appreciative eye, unless I'm drawing flowers, bunnies, and landscapes... Of course, the feeling has gone both ways in that regard--I've appreciated his stuff that no others in the family have. I count myself extremely fortunate/blessed to have him.

That'll be $35 "Unc."

Wow thats quite a funny story.

After looking at your two's gallerys I suspected that you two at least new each other well. The self portraits you two did furtherd my theory, the "nephew" comment was just the last nail in the coffin in my theory.

Its quite elementary...

I love this, it's so emotive. What media have you used? It's looks a bit like oil pastel, but I can't be sure.

Thank you very much, Ms. Nancy. I used soft pastels and little pastel pencil.
