a lot of the icons are just arrows and little things. if you want like the trash can, the documents, etc, i can make those for you.

Ok, one question... you are using SVG's for the images, so why are their varying scales? You could have tossed everything in a 'scalable' folder and let the SVG's do the maths of scaling images correctly for their respective usages.
Aside from that, design wise it's not bad. I would argue with Dan on the "Floppy doesn't mean save" idea if only for the fact their is still some reliance with that association, mind you, not much of one; the image-loading is VERY HIGH, it might be the simple fact of re-factoring the SVG's one at a time for each scale or something else, either way... it could have the potential of making this nice icon set unusable since on lower end systems (one of two things could fix this, one.... move the images to .png and keep the directory layout; or Two, move the highest scaled images to the 'scalable' dir and correct your index file accordingly. Mind you, you can have both... but it complicates matters); The full red home icon (if you are using the Linux Firefox 3.x, it shows up... they now use GTK+ widgets when possible), it seems to have this odd white mark at the bottom, it kind of annoying... but passable.
I am not sure if these help, but I have heard the same kind of talk among those that worked on tango.
You might want to look at that project for a few ideas, [link]
And Since you are strict about Gnome, you might as well look into the Gnome's HIG, [link]
That said, this is likeable. Very modern-like, I am enjoying putting it through it's paces, and like the design over all. Great work. I'll enjoy looking at the update...

We actually have an underlying design philosophy called the EIG (Elf Interface Guidlines) because the gnome is sinfully restrictive, unnecessarily. I've heard stories about denouncing themes on the soul basis that they look like aero. And buttons dont have to be
Did you mean the loading time on MY ICONS is high or the loading time of scalable icons is high?
I would like to make a scalable set, it would be much easier. That weird mark, i see it too, I'm working on it.
Yes. You WILL like the update. As soon as i can get my bluetooth mouse working with my linux partition, i'll be going crazy with revisions.

I have heard that myself, and really... any look at Gnome-look.org would prove that it happens anyway.
The problem that I have seen before is that simply put, artists submitting a theme to for default in Gnome tend to get tossed since they are simply too radical (which, funny enough, usually makes things resource heavy...) or put up a legal risk (like Mircosoft's Aero theme or Apple's Aqua theme. Also note that the Gnome Foundation is notoriously conservative... but what any distro does is outside of their control [Ub and OpenSUSE is a rather good example of this... just be warned, you could be alone once you do that], where you happen to stand...)
There are things that you might take away from the HIG that would not go said with others, that said... remember, it's not a limit, it's a suggestion. And things change all the time...
Well, I am not too sure of it myself... but one things is for sure, once the icon set is used there seems to be a constant 1: XX seconds of load on idle, which is weird... and doesn't happen to go down quickly. I will have it up for a few days, and look into it.
Funny, blueZ should be ok with that. But Ub is older than most distros that I have seen, so whom knows... Remind me of your verison of Ub again?

Well, after a few days of shaking I have a bit of a design suggestion.
The shade of Red that you use for this theme is bright, really bright.... like near seizure-inducing bright. I know, I know, it's not flashing or anything, but really all it would take is a screen refresh loop and you'd have a problem. I would highly suggest another shade of red, in fact I think that you might have found it in this theme... the icon used for stop is at a better shade of red than the entire theme. If you want to go picking and choosing, I would suggest that you look into this colour.
The load time is not as big as I initially thought, it seems to half as much I saw when I started the theme... at about 0:66s average, which isn't bad. Still, depending on libsvg, that can balloon... easily. I am going to take some time out to look at the SVG through Inkscape, I might find something in all of that.

is there a way i could automatically swap this color in all the icons at once?

JamesSarrow In reply to FrozenTheaterD [2009-05-23 22:08:47 +0000 UTC]
Not that I know of, no.
It would be something that you would have to change manually from my understanding of SVG. I could be wrong, depending on the program.

i spose if i had used the same gradient values for all the icons i could do it...but also consider that a lot of displays suck. What kind are you using?

JamesSarrow In reply to FrozenTheaterD [2009-05-24 19:55:16 +0000 UTC]
Some Metro no name... On my desktop, but I have yet to test it there (ATI rage card.... it's not going to be pretty, save for an upgrade). I have been testing on my IBM Think pad T40
No offence, as much as I know that most display's aren't grand but that is loaded with issues when you develop as high as you can possibly go. You are going to have to consider that, as far as hardware does, you have to have a lowest common denominator in terms of specs. Considering that does impose some limits but it does keep potential penetration high (by giving a person a large base to install to).

hmmm...that is a LOT of pngs...
most of them are part of the linux system and thus irrelevant (the back buttons and what not)
You'll see a couple of PNGs in the 256x256 directory, what else would you like?

Hmm... I don't really like it.
Suggestions:
Don't use the floppy disk for save, just like you would never use a punchcard for save. It's an old deprecated form of media.
Pick a style and stick to it. You have conflicting styles in some of your icons like the little star.
Use clear metaphors. Icons are more than just pretty pictures. They are there to help the user relate words to objects, actions, ideas, etc.
Read the Apple HIG entry on icons.

sorry. It's just kind of blah.
There are some icons that look like there was a lot of time spent with them, and some that seems just kind of thrown together. And then there are some elementary icons with splashes of red and indistinguishable black lines.
Like I've said a million times, work on the platform you're developing for. It will help you get a feel for what your doing. Certain icons in my set were done the way they were because I've been a GNOME user for the last 3 or 4 years.
Try reading the Tango guidelines as well. Read GNOME HIG about icons. Read Everaldo's little thing about "interaction design". It really helps to make you think about rules that others have followed in designing icons and to make up your own rules in designing yours.

sorry, i thought i only took the icons from your set that were part of the tango set or something, since i saw redundant icons.
I don't deny what you say. It's horribly inconsistent, but hey, I want a jumping off point. Just be careful how you voice your opinion :]
We do. I've read the Apple HIG and the Gnome HIG, as well as a couple of other things and thus formulated the Akumin EIG.

There are no Tango or Tango-Based icons at all in elementary.
I'm just saying it looks like you've been rushing to try and make it complete and you haven't really taken the time to make each individual icon as good as the last.
