Based on my and Armota 's headcanon. The whole scene was so amusing, Lynx and Carell are both babies, literally scaredy kittens I can't even. They're even holding hands. And when something rustles they hugged awkwardly. I just can't LMDAFJOFAOOO.
The community task was supposed to find one of Lynx's cats. In addition to Lynx's paranormal interest, him being Carell's professor, and the timing, Carell told him what happened and things rolled until they practically went to the cemetery together. They wouldn't have known that later on Lynx would also get severed lmaoooo.

The lit candle is suddenly extinguished..!
An eerie breeze blows through the cemetery, extinguishing the lit candle! It's dark, save for the flash light. A young girl is suddenly in front of the two!
"Your soul is damaged." Is all she says. She lifts a hand toward Carell's face. He's unable to move, whether from fear or an unknown force!
Your Red Thread is repaired!
Your White Thread is repaired!
With a smile, the young girl lowers her hand again.
"I have mended the damage done to you." Fate doesn't even glance at Lynx, as if he is not there. "However, your circumstance still remains unfortunate..."
The girl goes on to explain that, while Carell's soul is now secure, his life has been changed permanently.
You are now FATED!
Carell will begin to see spirits, and souls, and the red Threads of Fate that connect people! At first it will be hard to make these things out, but he will be able to learn to hone his skills! He will also begin to see monsters.. The very monsters attacking people! It is up to him to decide what to do with these new found abilities.
"If you wish to learn more, please seek me out in the future..."
With another quick breeze, the young girl is gone!
