Because Holy Diver made him the Chosen One, and he became a heroic guardian spirit, that's why. Nyeah.

He was actually humanoid to begin with. In the timeline where he turns bad, he becomes the hunched-over "lizardman" (at least, in my headcanon.) In my fan-made AU where he remains good instead, Holy Diver "adopts" him and he's transformed into a special kind of imaginary friend called a Guardian Spirit.
