You have created a very powerful image. The simplicity of a lone hand seemingly rising through the loose soil as though a corpse has been unearthed, or possibly found a way to claw its way to the surface, is macabre and symbolic. I had to look closely to see that the weathered hand was carved from wood. In black and white the textures are accentuated and the hand seems to be stonelike, almost petrified. Black and white was the perfect choice to make this image stark and to give the photograph visual and metaphorical depth. The words that accompany your photograph mirror the work perfectly. They are exactly the questions that might be asked of the dying - albeit, asked too late.

That is incredible - between the fingers, it looks like wood grain. Gorgeous piece. Perfect detail to focus on. I would like to see the rest of the sculpture now.

Thank you for the critique.

The hand is a detail of a ceramic sculpture done by renowned Australian artist, William Rickett, and is located in an outdoor gallery and garden featuring his work, the William Rickett's Sanctuary, which is located in the Dandenong Ranges above Melbourne, Australia, and administered as part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

I made a decision to take the images for myself, and to really push myself in what I do. Basically, I'm not trying to take images that I think will be popular, but rather to take images that are meaningful and aesthetic because of the concepts and the techniques applied. My main focus for now is to exhibit, and be recognised as an important Australian photographer and photographic philosopher, and at the same time to start running creativity clinics (maybe write a book on how to be a disciplined creative photographer), and perhaps get a book published.

Ambitious, much?

An interesting use of a carved hand, maskerading as both a spreading tree route and a rotting corpse. The dirt really makes for an interesting setting, but the little detail of the leaf makes it feel more natural and less tampered. All about the little details!

Aye... it is the details that count. I thought about moving the leaf out of the shot, but left it to make the image seem a touch more gentle.

Is that a wood carving? Who cares, it looks like a desiccated corpses hand reanimated and clawing its way back to the surface.

Very creepy. Well done

It's a ceramic sculpture... well, a detail of part of one by Australian artist William Rickett, located in the William Rickett's Sanctuary, which is part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park near Melbourne.

Absolutely, stunningly, terrifically powerful in its beauty. One of the best photos ever born on this planet, probably.

And really-the picture (in more than one way) demonstrates human nature.

As for your questions:

What is it that you reach for?
A way to balance the number of times I have lived with the number of times I have died. Just, some kind of justice.

What do you hold in your hand?
A wrist watch but not time.

Do you crush it, or nurture it?
Both are done, simultaneously.

Do you even know?
No, but I hope anyway.
