Just like Mario vs Bowser, Luigi's got his own enemy to fight and to say he surpassed his own fear of ghosts! Truly a remarkable courageous man he's become. Go Luigi!

I love how you made King Boo scary looking as he fits in the dark. Good job!

Mario's been around the loop many times. Bowser and his little goonies are just annoying obstacles for him now, hardly a challenge, just the same old same old. Luigi? He's not the most out-going, he's not the outright bravest of the bunch, but even so he faced an entire mansion filled to the brim with life-sucking ghosts, specters, and demons of all kinds armed only with a flashlight, a vacuum, and his determination to save his brother from an eternity of hanging in a picture frame on a wall for his enemies' pleasure. Mario always knew his enemy from the beginning; his strengths, his weaknesses, his tactics, but all Luigi knew was that there were ghosts. He had no idea what exactly he was facing until it was too late to turn back. And though he was terrified out of his mind of the demonic presence's around every corner, he never gave up, and in the end he saved his brother from eternal torment.

....Rant over XD I'm a very big Luigi advocate. Anyway, thank you! It may not seem like it to the casual onlooker, but Luigi's Mansion is a very dark game. I wanted to really show the depth of that darkness with the Boo in the doorway (I debated on whether or not to make it King Boo, but I thought the giant jewel crown would be a bit much and would really lighten the mood more than I was going for) I also gave Luigi the stance that shows his true determination to save Mario...because ya know, he deserves to be cast that way

I love deep and good analysis of great games such as this one. I do agree with your words. Β The red man's fearless about almost anything while Luigi isn't yet he managed to move forward and became as courageous as his bro. That's a far more remarkable accomplishment than the many things Mario ever did, in my opinion.

What I find really amazing about the green man, is that he probably harbors negative feelings about his older brother Mario for living in his shadow (how ironic that Luigi's taller than Mario!). But that doesn't stop him from doing anything in order to save him, even if he's scared as hell. I'm really glad Nintendo payed close attention to him, he deserves this.Β

I'm glad we're on the same page!Β
Luigi's values are close to home. They're simple, humble, and pure. Mario seems to be just the opposite. His values or self-centered and careless. Sure he helps people here and there, but mostly it is only so he can ultimately get something out of them or help himself in some way. He cleaned up Isle Delfino because he was ordered to by a judge in a court of law, and only to attempt to clear his name. Most other reasons are to save Peach because she's his booty...Take for example the NSMB Wii storyline; First-player HAS TO BE Mario. They can't be Luigi. But second player does NOT HAVE TO BE Luigi. They can choose to be a Toad, any Toad, it doesn't matter. So in other words, Mario HAS TO have the spotlight, but he couldn't care less if he shares it with his brother. Luigi has the same value to him as any other Toad out there. He can go alone or just share the adventure with a Toad for all he cares. After all, he's gonna get the girl and all the credit anyway. Luigi's only true goals have ever been for the happiness and health of Mario, no matter the cost to himself.
However, like you said, he likely does have some deeply buried grudges against Mario for the way he's treated him over the years. These grudges only emerge when he is pitted against his brother in any way. Mario Kart, Mario Party, (I wouldn't count Smash Bros because Luigi kind of gives off either a protective vibe over Mario from the other more foreign characters or a completely independent one). Luigi really savors his victories in Mario Kart and Mario Party, and I also think these victories have begun to give him more confidence (just look at the Luigi Death-Stare haha!) And rightly so. I think after Luigi's Mansion and the utter lack of gratefulness Mario gave him for saving his life, Luigi realized just how crummy his brother was, and though he may still look up to him and harbor a family bond of protectiveness and love towards him, he no longer believes himself to be lower or inferior to Mario. But he'll keep this confidence to himself. He doesn't want to steal Mario's spotlight, he never did. Now he wants one for himself.

Spoken like a true green man fan. He's awesome in his own way and I personally think he's the only one who showed character development, even though the Mario series were barely about showing character development to be honest. It's up to the fans to create some kind of character within that cast and it's disappointing me that the creator didn't do anything about it. :/

Mario, to me, is a few small steps above Pac Man or Tetris; simple go-to games when you have a few minutes to kill. Only recently has the series begun to get more in-depth with storylines. Even so, you're right. Luigi has certainly shown the most development out of all other Mario characters. Maybe that's one of the underlying reasons I love him so much haha

That got me thinking, why are they starting to show more-in-depth stories now? Why not back then?

Likely because they saw the success of games with stories and saw how the more arcade-like games are beginning to fade out. Eventually, people lose interest in the same mundane high-score-grabbing games that present no real goals, and since Mario was such a successful series already, I'm sure Nintendo didn't want their most iconic franchise fading into the pre-2000's nostalgia along with Tetris, Pong, and Pac Man (Pac Man really did not need a plot-driven game...it just doesn't suit him, I think). And I'm glad they gave the series more plots, even if there isn't much character development I absolutely loved Mario Sunshine and the Mario Galaxy games. ESPECIALLY since they made the ability to play as Luigi a REWARD for beating the game as Mario first. Luigi wasn't just an option, he was a major achievement! Goodness I want to play Mario Galaxy now
