Finally my scanner arrived. When I started drawing again, of course I was going to draw some RainbowSparkle, I mean, did you expect any different? This is how I envisioned a scene from 'Dawn of a new Day'. I tried to make Twilight's coat a bit darker than Dash's, but I think I failed at that. But I've also learnt a few things:1: Proper shadows are damn hard to draw.
2: I can't draw proper shadows.
I still can't believe I started with a blank sheet of paper. Well, three blank sheets of paper, but you get my point.

I've thought about it, but I'm still a bit wary of Spitfire's design. I already have something similar in mind, but I haven't published enough parts yet for it to make sense. I'll keep practicing on other ponies first and finish Taming Fire before drawing such a scene.

Wow, you started this with a blank piece of paper!? You did an awesome job on it! Did you use pencil or pen (or both)? You really did a great job on their facial expressions and how they look on the show! Again job!!

Thank you very much. For the llama, too. I used two different erasers and pencils - a hard mechanical pencil (if that's the term) and a softer, normal pencil for the thicker lines and some shadows.
I started with a blank sheet of paper, drew the rough shapes of their bodies, messed up beyond recovery, threw it away and made myself a kind of drawing guide for the head shapes and proportions on a new one. Somehow Twilight's eye gave me the most trouble there. From that I copied the right lines over to a third sheet, added the legs and mane and got to shading. That was the hardest part. Took me forever to figure out the lines on the pillow.
I'm actually surprised myself at how close I got to the originals. The heads are probably smaller than in the show, but ... meh. That's just a preference of mine. Cleaning the picture up in Photoshop was fun, too.

Wow dude, I sort of envy you (all s of course) of your ability to draw this good. As of now, I cannot draw for crap! The best I can do is stick figures. 
But eh, what I lack in drawing skills I make up in writing skills. I think I'm a pretty good writer, although I'll say that I'm not the best... I'm constantly improving my style with each story I write.
To me, drawing, like writing, is a series of trial and error. Like for this piece, it took you three tries to get it right. With my writing, I usually write a rough sketch of my stories in Word before I go back and fix them up. It usually takes me about three to four tries to get them right (some take longer, some take less, depending how long they are).

I don't wanna sound boastful or something, but I didn't get this ability overnight. I've spent most of the 8 years in art class in school just drawing. You should see some of my earliest stuff. *shudder* I've always liked pencil sketches and drawings and I tend to obsess over little things like line thickness or the exact length of the chin line down to the millimeter. Until I get bored with that, that is.

Really? Interesting stuff. I think I started taking writing seriously maybe when I was in 8th grade or something? But when I got to high school, my writing career EXPLODED and I eventually joined DA in 2008 and well, the rest is history. 
Sometimes, I have a nack to take what seem to be one part stories in my mind and extend them into four or five or even more parts. I also like to create OCs and make elaborate back stories for them. I created a MLP OC already and have his back story in mind, but haven't gotten the time to write it yet.

I don't really like making up whole new characters. I'm already horrible at coming up with names. I just like to explore already existing ones and maybe add something to them like I did in Taming Fire. Spitfire doesn't really have a character in the show.
But yeah, when I think of a story I usually expand it in my mind forever until I start to forget some parts. I really need to write more of that stuff down.

Me either, but I just do them for the heck of it. That's like me with the Star Wars universe, I like to keep within the timeline of the movies. Beyond them, I'm totally lost. I just like to explore them.
Yeah same here, I would come up with a brilliant idea for a story, not write it down, and eventually forget about it. Usually, some of the ideas that remain in stories I write up in the future. But yes, I have to write down more of my ideas that come to mind as soon as I think of them.

Thank you very much, but I had some years of art class in school doing pretty much nothing but drawing. But it still takes a buttload of time. I never found any of the drawing guides for ponies out there particularly useful and tend to start from scratch every time.

This... is so cute. I don't see enough gentle use of hooves being portrayed, and not only that, but their facial expressions are so adorable. I love it!

Such high praise, thank you very much. I've always liked pencil drawings. There's so much you can do with shading and the density and direction of lines that coloring might even ruin a piece. And I will keep drawing, even scenes like this one. I'm having fun and you can't stop me!
