Description This is the collaboration work between my 3d-impaired friend *furan-san [link] (she's awesome none the less) and me. Sun Wukong's Jingu Bang, or Power Pole for the DBZ illiterates (messing with ya!). Took me about 1 hour to model, and even though it looks easy, I wanted to make sure everything was how it was meant to be. Then played around with different render settings which can be seen in the image. I even made it look like glass. As allways, I work on Maya, rendered using Mental Ray

Little history, take from Wikipedia. Ruyi Jingu Bang, literally meaning "As-you-will Golden-bound Cudgel, is the poetic name of a magical weapon wielded by the Monkey King in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. It is an iron rod whose size changes according to the whim of the user, once used by Da Yu to measure the depth of the flood waters destroying ancient China, which Wukong obtains from the undersea palace of Ao Guang, the Dragon King of the East Sea. It is immensely heavy; in modern measurements, it is slightly weightier than 7.5 metric tons, which is why it is feared by many deities and demons as the ultimate beating weapon to be killed by. When it is not in use, Wukong shrinks it to the size of a sewing needle and keeps it behind his ear. It is often depicted as red with gold bands near the ends.

Well, there you have it!

so... why is this called a "cudgel"? It's obviously a staff!

Just so you know, this wasn't designed by furan-san, it's copied from the 2006 Japanese TV series Saiyuki

You know, the Jingu Bang is a weapon like Excalibur. There has been many redesigns throughout many works of fiction. It's like saying the original Arthurian legend copied off Fate/Stay Night. So has been the weapon from Journey to the West, and every work of fiction based on the original work written in the 16th century.Β

Xī Yóu Jì (Journey to the West) is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and one of my favorite stories. Heck, its an inspiration to many characters in games and anime like Infernape (Pokemon), Gokū no Daibōken and Dragon Ball.

Saiyuki is a 2006 Japanese historical TV drama based on the 16 century Chinese novel Journey to the West (Xī Yóu Jì).

Do you think I don't know that? Now in closer inspection, I have to say that it's not exactly the same design as the 2006 series Saiyuki, however the only noticeable difference is the rings on the staff in the 2006 show have a split down the middle and your design does not.

I mean I can accept that you may have been subconsciously inspired to draw the same design, but claiming as your own, in my opinion is disrespectful.

Holy Cow. That's mighty impressive, Temp. I never thought the Jingu Bang would look so smooth and life-like. I almost swore it was a real recreation instead of a 3-D model.

Nice renders...the glass is my favorite!

I wish I had Maya, but all I have is gimp ass Lightwave....-searches for torrents- On the other hand, I can't help but wonder if Maya is needlessly complicated at times.

I really am amazed. This piece seems so simple, but it isn't. At first I thought it was real. It looks like you could just reach out, pick it up, and thwack your sibling over the head with it. I love it.

There's a hypershade material on Maya that when used with Mentalray creates the effect. It's called dielectric material. Its really cool! The only bad thing is that light from the outside of the object can "penetrate" and creates refractions, which is when lights bends through a glass surface and reflects outside. But when you put the light source inside the object, it becomes completely blocked.

Hey tempest. you know me, not very maya literate, but in the shades in max you can allways chose whether the glass is solid heavy glass or hollow 2 sided glass. See if maya has it. Then you should be able to illuminate from within no problem.

Oh, quite interesting the object direct source of light.... I would have never thought of it. Youre a genious!

I'm posting because Furan told me to D:

It does really look beautiful, I have been having to use Maya in college and I can't produce results even nearly as good as that.

Just keep at it and read lots of tutorials and nag your professors to teach you beyond what they teach. It's what I do. Plus rendering and lighting takes lot of trial and error from my part.
